My fantail can spend hours on end lying at the bottom of the tank. Suddenly he will then decide to swim around and look happy as larry. There are no visible signs of distress. His gills, scales and eyes all look great and he seems to have no problems with balance or getting rid of his waste.

One minute Im convinced he is on the way out and the next he couldn't be better. The issue here is he could lie for over 2hrs and not move. It doesnt seem normal benvhour to me. Im relaitvley new but not compleltey as I already have two comets which are 6 months old.

My water temp is 22degC, ammonia and nitrite zero, there is a tiny tiny trace of nitrate but definitely less than 20ppm pH is 7-7.5

He has no problem eating and Im feeding him sparingly a varied diet of sinking pellets, peas, cucumber and freeze dried daphnia (tried live daphnia in the past but it introduced white spot to some other fish in a different tank

Thanks for this feedback. I have a fluval 2 filter in a 60 litre tank. The water flow is very good both in and out of the filter. If anything I was worried maybe the filter was too strong. I also have an airstone in and positioned in front of the filter with the theory the outflow water will pick up the oxygen and force it around the water

Im keeping a close eye on him and hopefully he is ok and just lazy like you say. He is still visble very healthy with lovely bright colours and no scale problems or any visible signs at all of any issues. Thanks

Hes a new fish into my tank which is very well established and water very good. He seems to be hanging on in there so fins crossed will be ok. When he is active hes great very active. Also no problem competing with a couple of comets at feeding time etc but he still spends a lot of time just lying at the bottom (under the filter in the corner of the tank)
