Is there such thing as changing to much water?

Im starting a new fish tank in my new house as i mentioned before and i want to keep it clean and healthy for the fish. I normally change almost 50% a week. My tank is just over 100 gal.

Yes.    50% is ok.  Some people will do more, but that might be only when there's problems with the water.  I have read on the internet that you should never change more than 50% at a time because it could change the nitrate level too quickly.

ok i will do that. I usually just about a 30% change each week but since im moving to a bigger tank i think i will do 50%.

There isn't really anything as "too big water change" when it comes to goldfish, the more you change, the better Smiley
One of my books recommend 75% every second week or ideally, 50% each week. I follow the earlier mentioned since the nitrates don't manage to reach any mentionable levels during the first week. But it all come down to your schedule and habits, whichever way you choose is fine, the fish will get used to it soon enough C:

But I'm getting a little confused, in one thread you say your tank is 50 gallons, and now it's slightly more than 100? How does it work? : D

My tank is 75g and I change out around 60% to 70% every week.  A python makes it sooooo easy.   Live plants also help to keep nitrates low and mine stay around 5-10 with a planted tank.   I don't change the water based on the nitrates though, I change it out to keep it nice and clean for the fish.  They are so happy after a good cleaning and new water.  Smiley

Hey Nossie i just thought that i would clear up that tank issur. I had a 50 gal but i upgraded to a 100 gal. Smiley

I realized that my nitrates stay about the same anyway, so sorry for the confusion.  It's something that I read during all my research, so maybe if your nitrates are way different from your tap water then it would be an issue.  But in most cases, it's probably the same.

actually im giving the 50 gal to my dad so he can use it for his fishing minnows to keep them alive and to breed them.

50% change on a weekly basis will not hurt i think. It should work for you just fine.
