Just Wanted to Introduce Myself
«

June 16, 2010, 12:25:03 PM »
Just wanted to introduce myself to everyone. I'm Yubonne a variation of my real name Yvonne-the neighborhood kids couldn't pronounce my name so it just kind of stuck
. I just joined yesterday. I live in the US.
Presently as far as fish go I am in the process of cycling-so no fishies yet. I have a 25 gal tank. Just this week I am getting my numbers headed in the right direction. Unfortunately, I am going on vacation at the end of this month through the first week in July so I will have to wait until I get back to get some fish. Water changes, more testing, and all that other fun stuff!
When I do finally get some fish I was planning on a moor, and maybe 1 or 2 veil or fantails, haven't decided yet. Want to check around to see what's available and healthy. I'm also considering getting a couple of bettas. I had one several years ago; but we have moved around the past few years and I kind of left my fish hobby go. My hubs and kids bought me the new aquarium kit for Mothers Day-in hopes it would make me calmer and lower my blood pressure
So that's about it. Just wanted to say Hi. I've been reading here for awhile and hope to fit in. Everyone seems so nice and fun here. I hope to learn a lot too. I need lots of help getting back into this fish mommy business!

Hi everyone! Thanks for the warm welcome.
Oh
...dang you reminded me of my 3 comets I lost due to the infamous new tank syndrome
I thought I was doing a GOOD thing moving them from a bowl they had outgrown to a big aquarium! It was my fault ; the tank wasn't cycled yet. RIP little fishies; sorry.
Back in the day all I did before adding goldfish you just dechlorinated the water and added the fish- they lived forever. Did goldfish get more delicate or does tap water have so much chemical crap in it it isn't fit for man nor beast?
Oh, yeah...I forgot...I live just across the river from the toxic capital of the world...New Jersey

I'm glad Obi started eating and settling in. I really want to get a couple bettas while I wait for the cycling to go. I had one years ago and he survived 3 suicide leaps (even the cat didn't eat him on the floor all night!).
You know what did him in? A new tank. I think I just have bad luck with em!

Aw I'm sorry Yubonne. I learnt about new tank syndrome a bit over a year ago and was lucky Sunshine survived. But he had survived about 2 years without me knowing it before then.
I imagine water is different all over the world. I've heard the water here is high in ammonia which sounds scary! I wonder if you used rain water or fresh spring water would you have to de-chlorinate it?

Here the water is high in (nitrates? nitrites? I really dont remember which is poisonous to fish...) ANYWAY its high in that regard, and so I dont do as high of water changes.. (I do like, 15%, or about as much as it takes me to vaccuum the bottom of the aquarium so its poop free)
lol Tiger and Sonorus both like chasing the food and poop particles that go up the tube. Once Tiger got stuck IN the tube!
LOL

Gee Yubonne, this scares me.
We are setting up this new tank for Humphrey and Hepsiba, as you already know.
Same reason the one they are in got too small. They also started to be more quiet, only floating, sometimes bottom sitting and sometimes wiggling.
I DUNNO WHATS WRONG.
I tested foe ammonia, nitrite, nitrates, all ok. pH is a little low about 6.2.
No other signs of illness, body looks beautiful, Hepsi did a healthy poop, haven't seen Humpsi pooping since yesterday.
Can they be bored in this tank, or is it because the water is cooler than in summer time?
Summer it was about 27 Celsius, now it is about 22 Celsius
I've got the feeling they need this big tank asap, thinking about Cycling Aid and move them earlier ? Not in 4 weeks but maybe in 2 ? Want to get the stand and the tank ready this weekend and start to landscape it.
Any suggestions please?

Hanna,
Are you getting any sort of readings for ammonia and nitrite ( are they both at 0)? If the tank is still showing ammonia or nitrite after this long, i would suggest you reduce the feeding to at most once per day and only a little at a time. You can feed them even once every other day to even further reduce the maintenance requirement and buy you more time to cycle and set up your new aquarium properly.
Goldfish will also tend to be more active in warmer water vs cooler water, but this is perfectly normal.

Nabi,
Exactly what I was going to type!
Hanna,
Hope you read Nabi's post as he is spot on! If your test readings are showing even a slight bit of ammonia or nitrites that will cause the fish stress. Your readings for ammonia and nitrites should be at zero!
The only thing it might be the ph. That is pretty acidic. Goldfish usally prefer neutral, 7.0 to more alkaline, 7.2-8.0.
Is the ph usually this low? Mine is usually like a 7.6-7.8 range.

Ok, let's talk about cycling with the fish if you put them over to the new tank in two weeks.
Your fish will be subject to real stress from new tank syndrome. Which may lead to illness and even death.
I would do this: Add a little of their poop water from their old tank a little every other day to the new tank to sort of "feed the bacteria" that is trying to become established in the new tank. Also, add bacteria booster right to your filter in the new tank once a week.
I guess I wouldn't add them to the new tank until the ammonia and nitrites are zero and you see nitrates showing up on the test results. This might take about a month. And then your tank would be pretty much cycled.

If water is too acidic or too alkaline how does one change that? I know what to do for ammonia, nitrites etc. But never pH though mine always seems fine.
Hope everything is ok Hanna
If the water chemistry is fine, I bet it's the water temperature as Sunshine has been a lot less active in the last month and a bit.

Ammonia reading is MAXIMUM 0.25ppm, which I put down to maybe wrong readings after I used some AmmoLock a while ago.
Nitrites and Nitrates are 0ppm.
I dunno want to stress them putting them in too early.
This is what I wanted to do anyway to use some of their poo water.
Tonight when I came home from work, they both were crazy to be fed. They are swimming normal now, maybe a little slower than normal.
Do you think I should put the light on for longer ats it would warm up the water a little more?
Thanks Nabi, Minde, Andrea, Kat for your advice. Hugs

Well warming up the water with lights wouldn't really work if you have florescent lighting.
If you have incandescent lighting then it will warm the water. I really don't think you have to warm the water as goldfish don't feel cold or warmth. Their bodies adjust accordingly. However, with big fluctuations of temperature it could in the long run be stressful for the fish.
Fish are more active in warmer water. Their metabolism increases. So they use more oxygen, are hungrier and therefore produce much more wastes in warmer water. I think your fish would stay healthier right now in cooler water.

Hanna,
What worries me is that IF your tank is cycled you should be seeing some nitrates show up.
You shouldn't be seeing any ammonia at all. Even a bit is a fish killer.
I would do what Nabi suggested and feed only once every other day for awhile and see if that helps.

That sounds about right. I forgot how long you have had your fish
and I agreee that the tank still needs to cycle (maybe add like, stressease?)

Already cut down the food.
I do have API Stresscoat and API Stresszyme.
I'll do a Nitrate test again.
I cannot figure it out what causes the pH to drop

I dont know either, anyway theres something called pH up, if you're interested. I believe API makes that as well, though im not sure.

I did the WIGGLE FISHIES DANCE and they wiggled back to me, so I suppose there can't be sth drastically wrong.
I also put the light on, they must love it if it is not too dull during those winter days here.....
