keep one side of the aquarium in the dark

I'm back to trying the idea of keeping one side of the aquarium in the dark.

I have a 55 gallon tank, 24" tall x 48" wide x 12" deep, and there are two 24" fluorescent lamps on top covering the width of the tank.

When I came downstairs this morning before the lights were on, all three of my gold fish looked splendid. I've been told by a couple of people that the natural habitat would be the tannin induced (peat or boiled driftwood) tank, a darker color than clear water.

After I turned my lights on things were different for one of my goldfish, Bubba. He clamped his fins. So I pulled the plug on the lamp to the right half, and it is now relatively dark.  Bubba took to the dark like a bear to honey. In fact right now, after feeding, all three are on the darker side resting and the fins are not clamped.

 Anybody else using a half lit tank? And if so, how do your goldfish like it?

Now you got me curious about one thing, how long did you usually keep the light on during the day?

It's very important to keep it off for at least 10-12 hours so that the goldfish can sleep, they get sick if they aren't getting enough rest Smiley

By the way, the goldfish look really old and big! Have you had them for long, or were they given to you? Smiley How big are they?

The lights have easily been off for more than 12 hours for the last week, and 10 or more everyday since I have had them.

I don't know the age of my goldfish. At the beginning of this month I bought each for $4 from a couple who had the goldfish in a pond and were wintering their goldfish in a tank. Last year they heated the pond, and it had cost them too much. So they had decided to use their tank.

My biggest one is 5" not including the rear fin. Maybe they are pretty old, but they're really very pretty when they are happy.  Smiley

Either way, I'm pretty sure that the way your fish are acting is not related to the lights.

I do! My goldfish doesn't seem to mind it. They're happy and lets not forget hungry as can be. Grin

My goldfish Bubbles doesn't like the light. He spends most of the day inside his log or underneath the plants. But there is nothing I can really do because the light needs to be on for the plants. I just make sure I provide enough shaded areas for him Smiley
He doesn't clamp his fins or anything though, and as soon as he sees me coming he swims straight to the side of the tank to say hello Cheesy
My other fish are not at all bothered by the light though.

I seriously think your fish will get use to the lights after awhile.
Maybe gradually increase the amount of time the lights are on. Smiley
