Are lava rocks safe with goldies and do you have any thoughts that you'd like to share if you've used them in any of your tanks?

Hmm I don't see why not, but we'll see what everyone else says Smiley I wouldn't mind having one in my tank but I wanted to leave as much swimming room as possible. Only thing I can say is make sure it is secured and cannot be knocked over. It could hurt or kill your fish if it did and many books that I have read warn you about this with bigger things in the tank.

I've heard they work perfectly Smiley But I don't know about any possible chemicals they may let out or something, so maybe you should look around the internet and see what you can find? Smiley

According to chemicals they are fine... BUT : they have holes and have got pretty sharp edges...
Nossie, Andrea and Minde sure remember when I posted about Humphrey being stuck in a rockhole ( about Easter last year )
I was frantic, seen only a rock with a tailfin, nothing moving, grabbed the rock and then little Hump managed to put the reverse gear in to come back out: result: missing scales, dizzy fish, long time scared of holes, scared fish mom and dad, treating with pimafix and melafix hoping that no secondary infection will come along. The lavarocks have been removed from the goldie tank and never been put back.

I would be worredabout it clouding your water lava rocks break down very easily. Undecided

Naaaa they don't cloud the water at all... but they are sharp and with holes where a fish can get stuck in... and maybe die... we don't want that....

Hmm remembering that story I wouldn't suggest having them  Wink I would stick with driftwood, it looks wonderful in a tank and is meant to neturalise the ph. Also if you ever put a pleco in there they'd have something to suck on Smiley

I saw them and thought the same thing, that the edges are pretty sharp looking and the goldfish could get scratched or torn fins from them.  They have natural stones out there like slate ( I think its called) that are smoother and without holes in them.  Seen them used in outdoor ponds a lot so they are safe for the goldies  I'm sure.  Having a hard time finding where to buy them around my area though, Lowes doesn't carry them and they are costly at the pet stores.  I'm goin to check with some landscape places and see if they have any.  Chemical free of course.  Smiley

The lava rocks are wonderful and a super great breeding area for beneficial bacteria.  I have them in my tanks with plants (anubias) growing on them.   Smiley
Not sure what is available in your area, but I got mine at petsmart.  I've also seen them online. Wink

Most lava rocks I've seen are really round and smooth (but with those small pores), so I don't think that would be any danger for the goldfish Smiley

Thanks for your replies Smiley One of my brothers has a box of these he was going to toss out. I took 3 small ones just to have on hand. Have read about anchoring live plants and moss to them and that the rock surface provides massive areas for beneficial bacteria to grow. But because they are so jagged I just had to hear everyone's experience with them if they have had them. Glad to see you are up Minde, hope you are feeling better Wink

Attached a pic of the size of them and hope to start a small tank just with plants in the near future. If I can get moss to grow on these or Java fern and Anubias I will try them then in the tank after the sharp edges have soft green growth on them Grin Also read that they can be broken into much smaller pieces and used in the external filter set up.

I must go back and read some of your posts before I joined the forum. Hanna, poor Humphrey Embarrassed I can't imagine how awful that must have been to have a stuck fish. I instantly got an image in my head of Winnie the Pooh stuck in Rabbits hole after eating too much honey! Poor boy. Thank you all again for your input Cheesy

Yesterday at the big fish store, they had complete set ups of 55 gallon tanks for $180...and they had the nicest Betta bowls with all the filtration built right into the back. For now I stick to what I have but it was hard to walk away from that  Undecided the MTS was looming in the back of my mind ha ha.

If you're worried about them being too sharp, maybe you could grab a file and try to make the edges smoother? Smiley

Some of the sharper edges broke off just by rubbing Nossie so this is good Cheesy They feel so prickly when dry. I've rinsed them well and they don't have any openings large enough for even the most curious of fin. The plants in the stores pretty much look like crap, maybe it's the time of year Huh My neighbor has several of these rocks in their tropical tank and said she has never had any issue with injury. I will keep thinking about it for now.

I've got them in one of our tropical tanks too, but keep them away from the goldies, as they must suck on everything and go into every hole (except Humphrey- he is scared of holes)... well yours havebt got holes, but i'd be alert with thier little lips sucking on them... remember, they are ROCKSTARS Wink

I tried java moss once. In only a few hours the goldies managed to rip most of it off the rock that it was tied too Undecided

I may tie some java moss on them, but I won't put them into the goldie tank ( IMO, for me anyway it is a NO for my goldies ), will keep them in the tropical one. Sure it looks nice to have some moss growing on them.

ROTFLMAO!  Grin I can well imagine and recall having a pair of tiny fishy lips vapor locked onto my pinky finger when cleaning Jilly's tank the other day. She's taking flakes from my fingers now ♥
