Hi~
Does anyone have duckweed in their aquarium?  I purchased some and put it in my aquariums but now they sort of look like snowglobes!  I guess I'm worried it might plug up my filters.  Should I take it out or just watch the filter and make sure they are running ok.  Is it good for the fish/ecosystem or can the aquarium and fish live without?

I have fed duckweed, but only when the fish were outside in the 150g stock tank, not in an aquarium with power filters.  I would just watch for now and make sure the filters don't get clogged up.  Fish can live w/out duckweed.  I had mine for years before I gave them any.  Another alternative to duckweed is good, old fashion green veggis that can be tied onto a rock or put on a veggie clip.  Try some blanched zucchini or broccoli.  Mustard greens, turnip greens, and kale are good also.  My fish love all these and they are not as messy in the tank.

Haaaaaa... just discovered this thread, old like brandy, hahahahaha... but I think it is worth it posting, as I have duckweed in my tropical tanks. It won't get sucked up in the filter, it swims on top of the water where there is no movement and it gives very good protection for the babies to hide in.
It grows very quick. So what I am doing from time to time: scoop it out in a tub, sort of quarantine it in a water with some aquarium salt, then rinse it again and put it in the goldies tank. They eat it as a salad snack.  Grin

( doing this, I HOPE the dwarf anubias will recover, and the java fern... Roll Eyes )

Thats stuff grows like rabbits reproduceing!!! Angry We have a creek in our backyard and it is covered with duckweed everywhere. Sad

Yeah the goldies love it.
I just keep it in the tropicals tank and then every week scoop some out and feed the goldies with it. Wink
