Um, Just curious, how do you know when your fish is pregnant? I've noticed perhaps that Sonorus was getting a little bigger around the middle.. not sure though.. how do you know? What should I look for? Also Tiger is following Sonorus around. normal?

It could be that she's growing, it could be wishful thinking...
But I guess Tiger would get a bit more aggressive if it was spawning time. He might be nibbling her belly to encourage her to lay the eggs. You could also try looking for those white tubercles on his fins. I don't know if they'd be very visible on the gill covers of an oranda... d:
A more certain way to know might be to try and turn the temperature up by 1 or 2 degrees and see if you see any eggs (:

The male will chase the female relentlessly while nudging her tummy. The female will become rounder in the belly. After about a week of that, change 25% of the water, as this will encourage the female to lay eggs. Provide some spawning material such as a loose floating plant like hornwort. Hopefully she will lay most of the eggs in the plant, as eggs that fall on the gravel are prone to fungus, and those that get caught in the filter aren't likely to survive.
If it looks like they're dancing in the water together and ignoring the other fish, it's likely that they are preparing to lay eggs. Changing 25% of the water and giving them spawning material will help to encourage them to lay.
(They like to lay eggs at around dawn, so keep an eye on them in the early morning. If they lay eggs, remove the parents from the tank before they recover from their exhaustion and begin to eat the eggs.)

I think Nossie's right.. It could be wishful thinking and that Sonorus is just growing..
Which is too bad. I wouldnt mind raising a little baby fish.. but no.. I havent seen any tubercules on Tiger, and as my water sits at about 22 C, I don't think now that its eggs at all.. -sigh- if only they were tho....

You know that it would be quite tricky to raise goldfish fry
For instance, you'd need to make sure to have fresh brine shrimp nauplii to feed them with daily, meaning that you should buy eggs and hatch them to feed your fish with, so they'd grow well
and you'd need to do frequent water changes in the "baby" tank since they need to eat a lot... not to mention that you need a separate baby tank! Or else their parents would eat them.
Secondly, as the 500 goldfish children would grow, you'd need to separate them and place them in other tanks... you'd also have to cull the fish at some point and remove the undesirable ones since you probably don't want to keep 500 goldfish c: That would mean about 5000 gallons of water, right? xD
So... I dunno, to raise good and healthy goldfish would take tons of time and effort. But it is of course possible if you only want to
By the way, I don't know if it would be such a good idea to have a comet hybridize with an oranda... xD (Sonorus is a comet, right?)

AHA! Tiger isnt oold enough to show those white puberty spots during spawning! they usually only appear after the fish is a year old (or so the pet store says). Tiger's only a few months at least

I just enjoyed reading the posts, yeah, Tiger-Sonorus babies may be well interesting to imagine
They may be the next celebrities
It is true, I read it up, it is difficult to raise goldfish babies, as the adult ones tend to eat their fry.
But sth. else: How can we tell the age of a goldfish?

Pluck off one of their scales and look at it in a microscope. Then count the rings on it.
Because, unlike many think, it's more or less impossible to try and tell the age of a goldfish based on their size, as their growth depends a lot on their genetical background, how much they were fed and what during their first months and how big tank they were kept in.

HI, Good Morning Nossie,
think it is about 20 to 10 Sunday Morning there, Sunday evening here.
This is very interesting to know, but I think I leave it, as they are so small
I'll better ask in the pet shop, the may be able to tell approximately how old our
fishies may be.

It's actually 11:46
We switched to summer time yesterday (: I hate that! D':
Yeah, I think it's better to do it that way, ask about how old the goldfish are when they get them to the shop and then it should be rather easy to estimate the rest!

Yes, think that too,
They also may tell me at which age a goldfish will be fertile

will need a new plant by then and then I will ask them
about the average age of their comets.
Will keep you informed
