Goldfish changing colour?
« on: June 23, 2010, 02:34:18 AM »

We have a goldfish that is white with a couple of splashes of orange on him...Over the last week we have noticed that his face and the beginning of his tail is turning yellow?  A week ago a friend of ours who is an expert on fish and aquariums placed some living plants in our tank which look good, we are wondering if it is contributing to our boy changing colour...He is a happy fish and does not appear ill in any way..Is it the plants?..

WELCOME TO THE FORUM  Cheesy

It is not unusual that goldfish change colour. It can be the plants where he's nibbling at, it also can be the food you feed, especially if it contains spirulina algae, different vitamins.

It is also known that goldfish change colour when they mature.

BTW, whats your fishie's name?

Thank you for your reply...We feed our boys spirulina discs, one, every 2 or so days...His name is wee nipper simply because he is the smallest compared to the rest of our boys...

If you look real close at the gill covers; even take a magnifying glass and look, you will see the raised tiny bumps if your fish is a boy.  Even if they are not spawning you can see them when they are not raised.  It's almost easier to see them when your fish is at a 45 degree angle. To me they almost look like the male fish has freckles.  My one male comet gets the raised bumps not only on his gill plates but he also has them on his face /head area and he gets them in a straight line down the inside of his pectoral fins when he is in the spawning mood!  Wink The females gill plate is very smooth. What a shame that it could be the spirulina cos my boys just love them...They chase that disc like a soccer ball so funny to watch...I have 7 boys, well I think I have 7 boys...One is pure white and I cant make out the gill area so maybe he's a she? And I have 2 white and orange ones and again cant quite make out there gill area...We just love our fish tank wouldnt be without them,,They all come to the front of the tank when we come near...Aw so cute...

Well, it is also said that their vents look different  Grin. It happened by accident when I took pics like mad, some show their behind.
One is long oval shape and the other one is round, SORRY FOR DETAILS< but I think it is interesting to know anatomical differences LOL  Cheesy, one day we may have babies. There must be some pics on this forum "How do you tell the gender of a goldfish"  good views on there

Kat, girl or boy we all love our babies, main thing they are happy, healthy fishies and they love us and our food giving fingers  Wink

deb@trev: Yo! If you're worried that your fish is turning yellow, you could keep feeding this "usual" food, but supplement it with some color enhancing staple pellets Smiley I've been feeding them to my fish for a long time, and it really takes out the reds in the fish! I have Hikari Goldfish Gold, as the color enhancing kind, but there are many brands that make this kind of food. So you could easily find some other kind in any pet shop! Smiley

And remember that goldfish need to be fed at least 3 times a day, with very small amounts Wink

Well congratulations!!  And how did you decide that you have 3 of each gender?
Did you see the white tubercles on your male fish?  This time of year they are very easy to see! Wink

I just studied them very closely, the goldfish have the raised white dots on their gills and the other orange and white ones are smooth...(What are the orange and white ones called anyway?) Smiley We are beginners to keeping goldfish, only been doing it for just over a year...Wouldnt be without them..So relaxing and soothing...You forget your troubles when you have these little treasures Smiley

The USA.  Indiana, specifically.
New Zealeand is nice.  I was an exchange student there about 14 years ago.

I'm also from the US...northern michigan actually!
Your orange and white have no specific name.  Unless just the head is orange or red, then it would be called a red capped or if they are more red and white and comets then they would be a Saras.
