We do run the filter ALL the time, so the airstone. They are only switched off when we do the water change.
Nossie already mentioned that Goldfish are very messy, as they eat a lot and create waste accordingly.
To keep your tank water clear it is very important to have the filter running all the time, normally your fish shouldn't worry too much about this. In an average sized tank there should be enough room for your fish where they are not disturbed with water turbulences or small currents.
Do they show any discomfort?
We also provide an airstone, about 20cm long at the back of the tank. Our fishies just LOVE those airbubbles... like toys...
So, good filtration and good aeration is very important for Goldfish... and sure you know about water parameters...
