Making gel food!

Someone expressed an intrest in gel food on another thread so I am posting my personal recipe which is just a combination of recipes I've found. My fish have been off flakes/pellets entirely since the first of the year and they have never looked better. Does anyone else make food?
You'll need:
1 cup kale .5 c protein (I mixed unsalted sardines with tubifex, krill, earthworms, blood worms)
1 cup mustard greens. 1 jar baby food peas
.5 cup fresh parsley. 1 uncoated multi vitamin tablet
1 cup broccoli. 3 T paprika
.5 cup zucchini. 1/2 tsp flax oil
.5 cup red bell pepper. 4 unflavored gelatin packets
.5 c canned pumpkin (plain). Water
Whisk baby food with 3/4 cup water (should equal one cup)
Dissolve multi vitamin in pea-water
Steam or blanch veggies (save the water!) you should have 2.5 cups cooked veg
Combine veg (no pumpkin), protein, paprika, flax oil, and vitamin mixture in a blender. Purée.
Mix in canned pumpkin. Use the water you cooked the veg in, add more water until you have two cups- boil. Whisk gelatin
Into boiling water until dissolved. In a large bowl combine gelatin and purée. Pour into casserole dish- only 1/4" deep, or pour into ice cube trays for large cubes. Tap sides of dish to remove air bubbles. Cool in refrigerator. Freeze. Take a 1 weeks portion at a time.
This made at least 4 months of food and I have tons of fish.

Oh wow! I remember considering making gel food before.... this website has a lot of recipes (

As soon as I find some gelatin and can source a few other things, I might give it a go. I imagine it would make tons of food for just Lucky!

oh, the bugs are killing me....
O why, o why, must it have worms in it??
Can something like this be made without the bugs/worms? (I haven't looked at any o the other recipes yet, it's just so hard to think of worms as good food for something...eww.

It definetly can. Some recipes only use fish and shrimp. I, personally, like to get at least a third of the protein from insects- just feels more natural that way. Even if you want to just use fish in the gel food you should think about getting freeze dried blood worms or tubifex, it's not gross at all. When I first made the food I was super squeamish about it. I'm a vegan and the thought of fish and earthworms all over my kitchen was quite nauseating but it's over quickly, your blender will come clean and your fish will love it.

All animals (including humans) will feel much better eating what they're designed to eat
We're supposed to eat fat and protein mostly, while goldfish are supposed to eat bugs, small fish, crustaceans and various algae and plant matter. Hence the worms...
I'd love to try this recipe sometime! I'll let you know how that goes
(Once I find all the ingredients) I'm slowly running out of frozen bloodworms, so it might be a good idea to replace that with some home-made goldfish food

wow, I might do something like this. I think it's really clever and a great way to get them high quality protein and fresh veggies together. I guess I need to put some ingredients on the grocery list and give it a try. There's also a couple of youtube videos on making gel food, one uses a sea weed called agar-agar.
