Need help!
« on: November 21, 2012, 02:14:03 PM »

Need help!  Here's the history.  Twenty gallon tank, hanging filtering system rated for 55 gallon tank, three goldfish (2-4" fancy fan tails, 1-3" fantail oranda).  Tank has been up over three years.  Had issues with dropsy at the very beginning on one of the fancy fan tails, cured that with a combo of Epsom salt added to water and lower protein food.  Life has been blissful for a couple of years.  Water always perfect every time I test it, Bella, Barney and Bailey all growing nicely. Then about a month ago I was on vacation and I'm not exactly sure what happened but pump/filtration barely working when I got home. Tried to trouble shoot over the phone and no good.  By the time I got home the tank was totally algaed over, water horrible.  I had to break the filtering system down completely and change much of the water and clean decorations as they are covered in algae.  Did NOT change gravel.

It's been several weeks and I can't get the water evened out again.  I keep doing partial water changes.  Now, my Bella is showing signs of dropsy.  Test results this morning: ammonia- 2.0 ppm, nitrite- 0 ppm, nitrate- 40 ppm, pH- 6.6.  I did a 40% water change last nite and added 2 tsp Epsom salt.  There is also a plex and a Cory cat in take to clean up.  I really afraid I'm losing Bella and I've had her since she was tadpole size. Help!  Thank you. Loridae

Hi Loridae,

Welcome to the forums! The causes of dropsy are often difficult to diagnose... so I'm not sure what to suggest there, other than keeping up with water changes, there are a few posts here about dropsy if you have a look for them and perhaps peoples previous experiences can help you..... but I also need to mention that your tank is heavily overstocked.

The absolute minimum stocking for fancy goldfish is 20 gallons for the first fish and then 10 gallons for each additional fish.
Another stocking rule, that I prefer is 26 gallons/100 litres for the first fish and then 15 gallons/60 litres for each additional fish, it generally just gives the fish more space which they will appreciate  Wink

So for keeping 3 fancy goldfish, you need a tank that's between 40 - 56 gallons, but with a plex and cory cat in the mix, I would say you'd need something bigger to accommodate them as well, so maybe something around 60 or 70 gallons.

The reason for such large tanks being needed is that fancy goldfish can grow very large, usually around 8 - 12 inches depending on the breed, so they need lots of space to be able to grow and exercise properly -although there is a chance your fish may have stunted growth, which means they will grow slower, seeing as they've been kept in a small tank.
The other reason for large tanks (and also large filtration) is to keep up with the waste these animals create. In a small tank waste can build up to harmful levels, especially as the fish get bigger and can cause problems with their health.

I would suggest to read this slowly and carefully and take your time to think things over, it is obvious you care greatly for these fish and only want the best for them Smiley

There are often second hand tanks around which can be cheaper than buying brand new, or you could always look for someone who has a tank large enough if you were unable to buy such a large tank - which would be completely understandable, it is a lot to expect someone to just jump up, run out and be able to buy a massive tank.

We are more then happy to help if you have further questions or need further advice Smiley Do let us know how little Bella is doing.

Update:  Bella looks better today and is swimming better after Epsom salt (it has always worked well for me in the past). .  I'm planning on doing a 75% water change today and then retest tank.  The water is real cloudy.  New Tank Syndrome gone wild. Never had this bad of a problem and I kept Salt Tanks for years.  Thanks for your help.

Good thing your fish is doing better!!

But your tank is too small for those three goldfish and the other fish. You need a 40 gallom tank for all of them.

Thanks for your reply.  You are absolutely right, I need a bigger tank.  I got these three about 3 years ago when they were just little guys.  Was for my granson because they ran out of cheap comets  at a carnival.  Naturally I bought fancies because I used to keep them.  Well, three years later and these are my babies..... Like the dogs and cats my grandson has brought home!  LOL.  I am aware though and working on a bigger tank.  It's a space problem, not a money problem.  I just have to convince my old man how great a 55 gallon tank will look in front of the fireplace! Hi Loridae, please see my reply to your issue in the other thread on the health forums, in case you missed it Smiley

Glad to hear the fish is doing better! Good luck with getting the bigger tank  Cheesy

Also just for future reference r.e. comet goldfish, they are much better off in ponds than tanks or bowls, a common misconception among public  Wink
