Meet Hawthorn!
«

I had no intention of getting a fish today! Really! But they had just got in Calico Telescope-eyes. This on has amazing finnage and I can find no defect. This is Hawthorn. She is in quarantine for the week and then she'll move into 29 gallons with my black moor, Blackthorn. She is absolutley fearless! I lifted her into tank in my hand and she is quite the nibbler!
Sorry for the bad picture quality!

She looks absolutely gorgeous!
Is blackthorn getting better then so that he's ready for a tank mate?

Thanks guys!
Nossie- blackthorn is improving slowly. I won't put them together until he is fully healed.

Thanks Lauren!I found her at Petsmart! I was so surprised to find her because she conforms to the breed standard exactly! (or as far as I can tell without measurments). She is sweet and very brave, has a great deal of personality. I love her.
Are you waiting for a bigger tank before you get someone? Or just cycling?

Just waiting for it to cycle, can't have a bigger one in my dorm

Good plan! I think it's pretty rare but there is a variety of broadtailed moor called the China Doll that stays quite small. I read about it on the website I showed you, raingardens.us I think it was. Here are some better pictures of Hawthorn.

You could always keep a moor Lauren, they are one of the smallest varieties I believe? Growing to around 6 -8 inches?
Maybe someone can confirm that, as I'm not 100% sure!

It's true
But then it's usually a good idea to either get the fish used to eating sinking food, or teaching it to feed from hand
Moors have pretty poor eyesight, and it wouldn't be good to have uneaten food laying around.

I would say hand feeding would be okay, plus if the Moor is on his own, it would be easier to feed and spot if it wasn't eating?
Pellets would be okay too, if any where missed by the fish, they could easily be picked up and held in front of the fish or removed from the tank with a net? That would avoid un eaten food being an issue?

A moor by itself isn't too difficult to feed. Blackthorn and Hawthorn are both in their own tanks, I just drop the food near them. Hawthorn will eat from my hand if I put it completely in the water. I think you should get a moor Lauren! They are so very cute.

I've been thinking about getting one, they're sooo cute
but how would you handfeed it without it sucking in air? :/

Scrub your hand and wrist with ONLY hot water then you can put your hand all the way into the water. I do it everyday and no harm comes to them. In fact I've gotten into the habit of never using lotion and rewashing my hands everytime I use soap, lol.

That's a good plan. Make sure you ask what day their shipment comes in (there is one every week). My little dear had only been there a few hours and there were tons to choose from.

The last time I got a fish from their new shipment he was so stressed he contracted a fungus and died in barely a week :/ now im hesitant to buy brand new stock b/c of how much stress it must be to move from their old place to the store to my place in like a day or 2 ya know. Think I'll have better luck this time lol?

As long as you have a cycled tank with a little salt dosage to put it in, the fish should be just fine

Aww that sounds great Lauren!
Cheri is also right about washing hands, I usually wash mine in plain water, then with soap after wards.
Also just one other thing that springs to mind and is fairly obvious so forgive me if it sounds st*pid for mentioning, but if you have any open cuts, then use your other hand for feeding. I swap what hand I use to feed depending on wether I have any small open cuts on my fingers (Sometimes they just appear like ninjas XD). Its just for safetys sake really! Although I imagine you could wear a plaster? But I could just see Lucky attempt to eat such a thing if it was ever to be on my fingers within her reach XD
Although the other day I dyed my hands blue with food colouring (I had been icing some cakes) XD Haha that took a while to clean off before I was happy with my hands being clean enough to feed Lucky! I usaully only need to clean my hands though, as only my fingers go into the tank because Lucky will swim up to me, I suppose with a Moor it's a different story!
