First Betta! Pics and a few concerns
« on: October 04, 2011, 08:14:42 PM »

Hi guys, Cheri here. I wanted to introduce Hot Noodle, he is a blue crowntail betta that belongs to my two year old daughter (she named him). I have only ever had goldfish but didn't want my kiddo's room taken over my a large tank. I did some research online and talked to the petstore people (always reliable.. Smiley ) but got some conflicting information. A website said .5 - 1 gallon is ideal but I couldn't do it. I got a 3.5 gallon tank with filter and light. I also read not to use a filter because water turbulence disrupts the bubble nest?? Is any of this correct? I installed the filter... In any case I'm not sure he is doing well. I got him home yesterday evening after the tank sat for 24 hours, I did not cycle it and the petstore employee gave me an odd look for suggesting cycling...Anyway he hid immediately coming out only to display around the perimeter of the tank. He even squeezed behind the filter! Today he is moving a bit more but is by no means active. When we fed him he ate but was quite unenthusiastic. How many times a day should we feed him? Also a friend and novice betta owner suggested that he didn't like the neon colored plants etc. I know they are quite bright (my daughter chose them) but I find it hard to believe it offends him.. Please let me know what I am doing wrong. Oh last thing- Is a 20% weekly change the minimum or the ideal amount. Thanks for any help or links you can give!

The first two pics are just his set-up.

Sounds all good to me! Especially with the filter. You don't have to worry about his bubble nests unless you want to breed him with some girl Wink
The plants are actually bothering him, not sure how much though, but it's been proven (by a member on the forum) that fish prefer natural environments. But you have to consider the fact that you barely introduced him, it's very traumatic for fish to move, especially if the water quality is different besides the temperature.

You are adding water conditioners to the water, right? Since you kept goldfish before, you probably know how important that is Smiley
Aside from that, I have nothing much to add, feed him once a day, and add some treats every once in a while! Bettas love blood worms, I've got freeze-dred and frozen ones, and Bruce goes nuts when I give him some Wink Remember to feed a tiny, tiny amount! Bettas are a lot smaller than goldfish and won't eat as much, and you don't want any left over foods on the bottom Smiley

I completely agree with Nossie - just an extra tidbit about food. Just my own opinion, but I like to feed my betta every day of the week but one. For example, I usually feed him every day except for Saturdays, or Sundays. This will help clear out your betta's digestive system, even if you don't feed him much on a daily basis.
