Thanks for that. Bit hard to get him/her to stay still enough to inspect under his/her tail, so I guess I'll just have to wait & see. Although like most expectant mothers, I have a 'feeling' its going to be a boy!  Grin

Yeah, I tried checking on my goldfish too, but in the end, I'm only 100% sure about 2 of them. One would be Horus, the pom pom who had breeding stars a short time after I got him, and the second is Berry,the biggest one of my orandas Smiley Those two are almost the two biggest in the tank, which is probably why Tongue

Are breeding stars another name for tubercles? & How old/big does a fish have to be before they start developing them ususally?

Yep, breeding stars = tubercles. Goldfish mature sexually after about one year, but are in their prime after 3 years or so. For each goldie it's a bit different.

Ok next question...
How old are goldies usually when you buy them from the LFS? Not the larger ones but the small in bulk variety. I got mine in march so I've had them approx 4 mths. 2 of them have tubercles. Would they be a year old yet? The largest (a fantail) would be roughly 2 inches - not inc tail.

The small ones are usually a few months old, probably close to a year or so Smiley Your fish are most likely past a year, maybe even a year and a half?

Fun facts: Some goldfish don't mature sexually until they're 15 Wink Very rarely, but it happens!
