Nemo and Bubbles eating out of my fingers <3
« on: December 12, 2010, 11:33:35 PM »

After some people on this forum talking about their fishies eating out of their fingers I thought I would give it a try..and they came up to the top of the tank straight away! I don't know why I have never tried it before.
You can see Fanta in the background - He preferred to find his own food rather than be hand fed lol.

Excuse the music playing from mum's radio in the background Undecided and me for not holding the camera very steady.

They were all doing it this afternoon. They are learning very quickly Smiley As soon as I put my finger into the tank they come up to it and nibble on it hehe, even when there isn't any food in it.
Btw Hanna did you end up buying that seaweed I showed you? Thats what they are eating Smiley

How sweet! Smiley Mine use to eat the gel food off my fingers, there's usually a small drop or two left from the bag that I have to take away with the tip of my finger Smiley

I was going to post a new thread to ask but I might as well post it here as someone can probably answer it in one sentence Smiley
What are those little things that stick out on both sides of a goldfish's head not too far away from their eyes? They kind of look like little horns lol.
Could it be their nostrils?

That is where the nostril is located.  The nasal septum, or narial flaps is what you see flapping around as they swim.
In the pom pom, the narial flaps, through breeding, have been enlarged and folded over many times to give them the appearance of velvety pom pom's.  Smiley

Yep, Minde covered it Cheesy
The nose flaps tend to grow pretty big on older fish btw, that 8-yo. fantail we have at home has really, really big ones! Cheesy While my kids don't have that much yet, even if they're pretty big already Smiley

Think, nose-hair on old men xD

Goldfish have a sense of smell so to speak but the sense of smell is not the same as with us because they live in water. Smiley
The distinction between smell and taste is about the same, in that they more or less have a highly specialized sense to chemicals diffusing through the water.  They have what's called chemoreceptors inside the nasal openings, in the mouth and around the head that helps them find food and also communicate with their fellow tank mates. Ah great thanks for the information everyone Smiley
Haha Nemo is 5 and his 'nose hair' is the biggest in the tank Cheesy
I can tell that they have a sense of smell because when I put food in the tank sometimes they don't see me put it in but they turn around and start swimming towards it straight away because they can smell it.

Thanks a lot, girls! Grin *gives karma*

Some fish release certain chemicals that other fish can recognize through smell Smiley For instance during spawning Smiley
Just releasing the water from a tank with an egg-producing female will make the males display various spawning behavior Smiley Also, some fish release a chemical when they notice danger, to warn the rest of the shoal. Especially minnows do this.

thats definitely interesting to note. *adds point to fish intelligence*

I might compare how fish operate and how humans operate, start a campaign against cruelty to our finned friends.

Well, basically, fish work the same Smiley They feel pain too, although, not very intense suffering. They have pretty well developed senses too, even if you wouldn't think so Smiley

Hey, if you're interested in the fishes' senses and "habits" you could buy a book called "Fish behavior" by a guy called (something like) Stephan Reebs Smiley It's very fascinating! Cheesy
