Tank Bullying?

Hi again guys, just a quick question today on my goldfish, I've noticed this happening for a while and I've just come round to doing something about it, I've noticed 1 of my fish ramming its head into its 2 tankmates, is this just playing around or is this a serious problem?

Depends on your tank, if you have 3 goldfish in anything smaller than a 40 gallon, you can be pretty sure there's actually a space problem. Some goldfish may become territorial if there are too many fish in too small a tank.

Nossies right it depends on the size of your tank. How are the other fish? Do the sit at the bottom of the tank? Are they still eating? When my fish started doing this due to the tank being too small the other fish stop swimming and became lethargic.

All other fish are fine and are still eating, its only that 1 fish that picks on the others

What size is your tank?
220 Litres
What type of fish have you got?
All comets
What are your water perameters?
Unsure as I don't have a test kit.. Yet

Has your tank temperature risen lately? Could be some breeding behavior going on, try looking for some breeding tubercles on the gill covers and pectoral fins of the one chasing.

If I'm not entirely wrong, you've set this tank up just lately, it can't be cycled yet. You do change half of the water every other day to deal with ammonia, right?

Wait, your fish are comets, not fancies?

In which case, they will eventually grow out of the 200 litre tank, those fish can grow up to 1 foot in length.
You will need either a 6ft x 3 ft tank or a pond for them, to house them permanently. But your tank will do as a temporary set up for now Smiley

How has their behaviour been? Has it changed at all?

When I had a 55 litre "55L IS STILL NOT BIG ENOUGH FOR GOLDFISH"

When I have a 220 litre "there's something fishy going on"

Moor, just in case you do come back, those fish will need their accommodation upgraded, I know it's frustrating that when you have a bigger tank you realise it's still not big enough, but that's just the way it goes sometimes.

It isn't a case of the 'grass being greener' it's what the fish need to have enough space for exercise, enough to space to grow, enough space to be happy and healthy Smiley

Look we aren't getting at you honestly but have you ever seen a fully grown koi carp in a pond? That is the size they grow to. Can you honestly see 3 koi carp having room in the tank you have?

Didn't Moor already give away his koi to a pond.

 If he does come back my advice is to watch them grow you decide if you need to upgrade. Like if your fish are getting to big. Or if after you get a test kit the water is off a lot.

Did Moor have koi?

I re call Dulcien had koi and re-homed them to a local pond, didn't realise it was a similar scenario here.
Moor if you did re-home some koi, ask if the same place can take your single tailed goldfish (that is if you can't manage a pond or large aquaria).

No I was using koi as an example. Everyone has seen a full grown Koi.

But common goldfish don't need nearly as much space as a koi carp, they don't grow as big either.

4 comets is what he has;

choices:-
 1) dig a pond,
 2) a 6-foot tank of at least 450L,
 3) give them away

I think we pointed out to him these options, but first he got a 55L, then he got a 200l; he should have saved his money and gone straight for the big tank or pond

Wow scrivens 115 gallons for 4 comets! But remember he gave away 2 comets in the last thread he made when he had the 55 liter. So his tank was fine since he only has 2 comets.

Ok I'm sorry it's just the only fish that people have seen full size. I was just trying to make it visual for him so he didn't kill his fish.
