HUMPHREY & HEPSIBA's tank before and after
« on: April 25, 2010, 02:35:08 AM »

 Wink  HI everybody

we did it: installed the undergravel filter, we do have adjustable valves so the draw is not too strong for the plants.
I replaced the rocks with small holes with a teracotta vase where Humphrey can swim through without getting stuck...they both can swim trough at once if needed  Grin

Humphrey first swam in circles arround that vase I think half a million times before he was game enough to swim through  Cheesy

Let me know what you think  Wink

Andrea, no worries, lol  Cheesy

Nossie, yes, I seen that vase last week as you know but had to household with expenses then. I agree Hump cannot get stuck anymore in a hole and frighten the living day light out of me  Wink

Katarine, thanks, this is part of my Blue Onion tea- and dinnerset, I inherited a few pieces of my dear Grandmother and I stocked it up over the years, lol  Wink but I do have a collection of beersteins Grin slurp, slurp

THANKS to all of you, we love that vase too, including our fishies, Nossie confirmed they are boy and girl (see under General Discussion / How do you tell the gender of a goldfish, ... I posted 2 pics, lol  Grin )

By the way, that's exactly the plant I was talking about! (: How is it attached to the vase? : D

I recently noticed that my calico fish might just be a little girl C': And I'm afraid that my world will crumble, because Cream and Honey both could be males! o___O my lovely Creamy Ice princess, NOOOOO!!! D':
But I can't be sure until I'll see some breeding tubercles I think... >> *there's still hope*

The vase must have a little hole where the plant goes through because inside it I could see a small sucker or plastic button, only a small one

Creamy will be the Ice Cream Prince, how cute  Wink

I asked today in the petshop where we bought our Humphrey and Hepsiba, they said the averadge age of their goldies is about 4 months. so Hump and Hep are not older than 6-7 months now. So it will be a while I think...lol... but I also noticed that Hump is playing with her quite often, bumping Hep gently on her belly with his nose  Grin
This behaviour made me to look out for a difference  Grin

How I got those shots? just took pic after pic, eventually they turn their behind towards you...hahahahaha  Cheesy  Grin

Aww (: Ice Cream Prince sounds so cute! I could live with that <3

Either way, I was wondering lately about when goldfish are sexually mature, and it said that it varies between 1 and 7 years! (YES, SEVEN)

This is interesting, seven years... I knew about after 1year of age
but it may depend in what kind of environment they grow up ?

Katarine, did you see the latest pics of Hump and Hep? I posted some in "General Discussion / How do you tell a gender ..." or so  Grin

Yes, it depends on the conditions that the goldfish is kept in, obviously if the goldfish doesn't enjoy the environment. it'll grow smaller and get mature slower Wink

This is more than logical, isn't it?

Well our Hump and Hep they grew quite a bit since we got them  Wink so they must feel well  Cheesy

Did a waterchange again, will test tonight, hope the Ammonia and Nitrates will go down again another step. Undecided

Yep Cheesy

Goldfish grow the most the first year, so it's crucial that they get fed well with protein rich food so they can grow big and strong (:
And my little Popo got so much prettier since I bought him! He looked so thin the first two weeks, but now his body's getting deeper and he's looking healthier (:

I'm sure it'll be okay! Grin As long as your fish don't feel bad because of the ammonia you're doing fine I think (:

I like the pot, too.  We have a plastic log with a hole in both ends that's been there since day one, and they still go to it when they want to have a safe place to be.  It will be an unhappy day all around when they finally get too big for it.
This probably belongs in Tank and Equipment, but I heard that clay flowerpots, like you can get at a gardening shop or supply store, are nice for a tank.  Can they be put in a tank safely, or do they have sealents, pesticides, chemicals, etc. on them?

I heard that too somewhere! But I think it's safest to ask, simply. A natural terracotta pot for example shouldn't be too bad (:
But you might need to clean it a bit before putting it in the tank or it might "leak red dust" allover the place c:

We bought ours in the aquarium store, it is natural terracotta.
But if you like to get one from the garden center I'd rinse and rinse and rinse it as much as you can with hot water ( but not that hot that it will crack ) and soak it in old tank water for a few days before adding it to the tank.
