click on green link below and please answer the questions as best you can and then post results ie: ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and pH levels. Tank size and so on. Then we can respond appropriately on to how to proceed in treating your sick little ones. You must test the water asap so we can determine what you might be dealing with illness wise.

Yes please do what April said, with that information we can help you to the best of our ability.

However, I can tell you straight away that your tank is unfortunately too small for two goldfish. Goldfish need 40L's each and you are going to continue to see problems until you upgrade to at least a 80L tank as most problems are caused by bad water quality which is what happens when goldfish are kept in tanks too small for them.

Now you do you know the exact results of the water test, could you go back and get it re-tested and post the results here? Did you do a water change before you started treating and are you continuing to monitor water quality? It won't heal unless your water is perfect.

Did you quarantine the new fish? Every fish should be quarantined before adding them to the tank as they can easily bring in disease and kill your other fish. It could have been caused by that OR because your tank is too small for both of them now, the nitrates are going to continue to build up. Nitrates really shouldn't be above 40, they are best at 5-20 Smiley

I would do another water change and start treating with AQUARIUM salt and melafix and pimafix. Just follow the instructions on the bottles Smiley If you don't see improvement within 3-4 days of using that well it is time to go deeper, let us know and we can recommend some other stuff.

roliver, welcome to the forum.

Please do like April and Andrea already suggested. This is why I created this sticky to make everything easier for both sides.
Please answer all questions and we sure will be able to help much better, seeing the proper results of the water test and at least one pic of the sick fish, description of the tank including equipment. Smiley

THANKS  Wink

You want to do at least 25%.
You can do more if you like but should wait until you get the test results from the pet store.
If your nitrates are 40 or above, I would do at leaset a 50% water change. Smiley

It would help if you'd for now, get your own water test kit Smiley When treating sick fish it's important to keep track on the nitrogen and pH Smiley So buy one with everything at once: pH, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate, which will be the cheapest way out, or buy them separately and start with pH and nitrates for now.

However, I don't need any more info than you already gave, so I'd advice you to start looking for a larger tank Smiley I'd go for a 100-120L, extra space is always good.
And while treating these fish, do try to keep the water quality good, change a large amount before treating so that you won't have to bother the tank while the medication is working. So I'd say 50-70% would be good. I guess the medication you use is good, but in case you need something else, look for some anti-bacterial medication, it usually says on the bottle what it's for and it sometimes has pictures of the diseases Smiley It may be good for your fish if you bought some medicated food as well! I got some anti-bacterial food by Jungle, that one of the members here kindly sent to me, and I've used it on my quarantined fish already, it works great Smiley

Everythin else was ok on the tests.  Also wen addin new water i made sure it was similsr temp, if not warmer just incase.  They seemed aittle more active. They r both still eatin, not much, but sumthin. (Pelit food)  i was thinkin of goin to a vet n askin for advice, cuz the pet shop didnt sound confident. Is there anythin else i can do? Thanks again for ur replys.

Well it sounds like your water quality is good. Do you add water conditoner to your new water?? This is very important. If you don't have any, go get some asap! Continue with the treatment and don't do another water change until you finish (unless the bottle says differently), you should start to see an improvement soon. Have you got a filter?? And/or airstone?? These are also very important as there won't be much oxygen in the water without them.

I'm not sure what else to say, but could you also check out this link about feeding your goldfish to make them healthy and strong fishies (Link is not visible to guests. Please register to view.)

Are you able to get a bigger tank?

If possible and I'm sure it most likely is but could you post some photos of the fish? There may be something you are missing that is wrong with the fish.

A friend gave them to me.

Just because you "did it like this before and they were fine", doesn't mean that your goldfish are thriving in such a small space. In case we didn't say it before, goldfish are growing big, and they're growing fast. Think about it, do you think two 6-8 inch goldfish would feel comfortable in that tank??
No. Each fish needs 40L but the minimum tank size for ONE godlfish to live comfortable would (according to me) be 70-80L due to the dimensions of the tanks. So if you don't want to get a new tank for the fish, give one of them away to somebody would care to give them enough space.

Not to mention that they're really messy, and as they grow, the get messier, so in the end, the fish would poison themselves and die after maybe a year or two? And you'd happily say "they died of age". A goldfish can easily live 15-20 years if cared for properly, so please, do bother.

You really don't want to get a bigger tank? Really?  Roll Eyes It's not that you can't but you don't want to? You have two sick fish and a fish that has died in the past because of water quality or lack of oxygen, there is no other explanation! I had two goldfish in a tank smaller than 20L's for a few years, now I know they weren't happy and could still be alive today if they had a bigger tank  Angry You have the opportunity to give your fish a better life which I wish I had and you don't want to?

Are you saying we are wrong? People are much much more experienced on here than you and we are just trying to help your goldfish. You don't get fin rot for no reason.

The stress killed it!   I know ur much more expperiienced i ii thank u for ur time n efforts too. I do really care about the fish, i wudnt b on ere n other places until all hrs of the mornig (i live in the uk!) If i didnt care, wud i?! (Oh n fightin illness myself too!)
I dont have the space for a new, bigger tank, and mayb shud have sed that b4, so im sorry!  If i really have to, i will give one away.
I didnt mean to uset anyone, so therefore im sorry!

To get photos up you have to press reply, don't just write in the quick reply box down the bottom. Then you should see Attach in bold and then you click the button and search your computer for the file Smiley You can add more by clicking more attachments.

It's ok, we know you care about your fish or you wouldn't be on here, it's just that we also care for them  Smiley It's more understandable that you can't get a bigger tank than you don't want to, one must always be careful with their words. However, I must say a 80L tank would really not be that much bigger than a 64L though it would make your fish alot more comfortable and life easier for you. Can you not fit that extra few centimetres in? Maybe look for one that is the same size in the width but a bit taller in the height.

If you get any Christmas money, I think it would be great to spend or save it for a new tank and you could have your fish for years! For now, how are they doing? Are you seeing improvement with the medication?

In the end if you have to give one away but only to someone you completely trust! It would be better to get a bigger tank, but until you can save up for it or work out a solution. Keep up with your water changes, I would do about 50% per week BUT keep an eye on water quality. You'll have to do bigger water changes if your nitrates continue to grow.

Ruth,
hope you get well soon, so it will be easier for you to look after your fishies too.

Very important at this stage to keep up with waterchanges on a regular weekly basis, maybe  every 3rd or 4th day at this stage untill you are able to get a bigger tank, maybe as Andrea mentioned, not wider but taller Wink Sometimes there are package deals around  Wink

Cheers Hanna

Ruth, until you can get a bigger tank, you could just get a bigger filter?  could you afford that?
A bigger filter and weekly water changes might buy you some time until you can afford to get the bigger tank, and then you could maybe use the bigger filter on the bigger tank! Wink
I hope you get well soon and have a happy holiday! Smiley

Definately a bacterial infection.
Follow this link, I just treated a fish I bought to save her with fin rot.

Very sorry, but I don't think that second one is going to make it Undecided You don't provide enough space for the fish, which is bound to a constant struggle with water quality... not to mention that his fins have deteriorated BADLY. You can see how he's clamping his fins as well, another sign that he really doesn't feel good.
You'd better get started with the proper treatment.

Hi Ruth,
I don't think Nossie is having a go at you, look in a situation like this sure you are worried and being not too well by yourself some words may sound harsher than they are.

Nossie and all of us here only want to point our how serious the illness is and that it is so very important that you start treating like Minde did ( see her post )

I also noticed some white fluffy stuff there on the plants ? ? ?

Oh no Ruth, you misunderstand these lovley girls are so devoted to the health and wellness of Goldfish, and only wish the very best for you and your sweet fish. We all do sincerely. I came on this forum quite distraught many months ago with a sick Goldie and received the most direct and informative directions on how to help him. No sugar coating and I did exactly as instructed and let my ego sit to the side. Honestly I don't believe that is anyones intent in sharing their vast knowledge, just very passionate fish keepers here, not judging you. Your one goldie shows improvement and this is good to see. Sadly, the other beauty may be too far gone and I think that is where Nossie is coming from.

The white stuff i think is frm their fins, i only have fake plants in there. The water is swimmin in wot looks like the dead bits of fin, but i cant get it out. :-(   a friend is guna get sum medicated food hopefully 2moz, so im prayin that will help.
I do really appreciate all ur support. So a big thanks!
