Odd goldfish behaviour
« on: January 04, 2014, 10:57:19 AM »

Greetings fish people.

I registered here because I'm concerned about one of my pet goldfish. He's been acting rather strangely for quite some time, maybe even a year now. He used to have trouble controlling his buoyancy, and would often float upwards when he stopped moving and sometimes roll upside down. It sounds like swim bladder problems, though he did frequently gulp air at the surface, leading my dad to diagnose him simply as a st*pid fish that was too full of air.

I'm not convinced though. Why would he be gulping air in the first place?

I started to get more worried around Christmas this year (2013), where he'd usually behave fairly normally and quietly, and them randomly spazz out and swim wildly around the tank, creating much splashy disturbance. Now he's showing signs of fin rot in his tail, and spends most of his time sitting down at the tank floor. This is a change in his behaviour since he doesn't seem to float upwards uncontrollably (in fact it looks like he sinks now) and I haven't observed many wild splash sessions in the last few days.

I've done some research and found that in this situation, there's either: (1) something wrong with the water, but we do 50% water changes frequently and the other fish in the tank doesn't show any abnormalities; or (2) he's irritated by a parasite, which could explain the fin rot.

If anyone can offer any more informed advice I'd be very grateful.
He is kept in a BiOrb tank (60L I believe).
I have been treating him with Myxazin Fin Rot & Bacteria medicine, though my bottle is quite old but not out of date yet.

Thanks.

Sounds like water quality issues. More than one fish in a 60L tank means that nitrates build up very rapidly

Thanks for the advice. However, I think the fish is better now. He is swimming normally and no longer floats around aimlessly. His tail should heal and grow back.
