My New Goldfish!

I've been keeping freshwater tropical fish for about 7 years, and I decided to try some goldfish. I bought them with my dad yesterday!

When we came home, I put their bag on the counter and went to freeze frozen food for my other tropical fish, when I heard a huge *BAM!*  Shocked It was so scary. I didn't know what it was, but when I turned around, turns out the fish's bag had fallen onto the floor! I was panicking big time, but thankfully I got them into the tank within a minute. They're fine now, happily chasing each other around. I fed them frozen bloodworms ( I thawed them! ) and Goldfish pellets. Is that a good mix of food for them?

It's a really good mix of food for them! But since you have fancy goldfish, you need to feed them some vegetables now and then Smiley Frozen peas (that you thaw and pop out of their shells) are great! They're easy to get, and easy to feed to your fish Smiley You could try sliced cucumber and some lettuce too!

I know - I don't know if it's all goldfish but mine can have been just a teeny bit picky about which parts of the pea they eat! I always de-shell the peas, but they always leave half of the outside of the de-shelled pea uneaten - weird

I just bought my two fantail goldfish but i have just been feeding them goldfish flakes. I think i might try the peas or veggies. Are you suppose to de-shell the peas or just pop them before you put them in??

goldfishluver: You have to remove the outer shell of the peas, the fish would have problems eating them otherwise. And you can do that by just squeezing them and the pea will come out on it's own!

Yes, also you can try broccoli, zucchini, cucumber, orange pulp, strawberries and watermelon.

Ours like leaf lettuce and salad greens, especially spinich.  They eat cucumber slices, but just eat the soft middle out. Wink

Spinach is actually not a very good thing to feed goldfish! It's interfering with their absorption of nutrients, because its chemical make-up is different from aquatic plants~ So rather avoid that and feed them some lettuce instead ;>

Anytime Smiley But really, if you'd feed spinach only once a week or something and not feed them anything else for a while, I bet it won't be a problem! Because spinach is very nutritious otherwise Wink

My frozen food I feed my fish contains spinach.
They love it.  It's for all aquatic fish and reptiles too.
My sister feeds it to her turtle too. Cheesy

Zucchini makes a good fish food/toy.  We put some slices (sliced longways) into the tank to just float, and the fish would chase them around.  Every time they nibbled, they would push the slice a little, and the chase would be on again. Smiley

Cool! So maybe it makes such a small difference that it simply doesn't matter for the fishes' nutritional requirements d:
I wouldn't know! I don't know if I mentioned it, but I read it in a rather new book I've got d:

BUT, I noticed that many fish keepers have very different feeding preferences. For example, I've read a text by one who wouldn't ever feed any live foods to his fish because he worries about disease. And I, myself really like the idea of feeding them to my fish, I feel like it's healthier and more natural Smiley I wouldn't like to eat canned food all the time myself for instance!
The same guy is also against live plants and most kinds of rocks... and also gravel, so I wonder what he puts into his tanks o_O

Yeah that guy is a strange one.  I'd love to see his tank set up too.
Well anyway I've read some very strange feeding ideas too!

for instance Baked beans was recommended...I just couldn't bring myself to feed my fish baked beans!!! LOL! Cheesy
And another one hard cooked eggs!!  I would think that eggs would foul up the water terribly. Undecided

Yeah I guess so and some breeders mix egg yolk hard boiled, with water to feed baby fry.

I understand egg yolk, but... umm... whole eggs? Naah... Feel like the rubberish texture would be hard to chew through d:
I also heard that someone was feeding them fish cooked rice, spaghetti and also liverwurst o.o They made a gel food out of it... *shrug*

There were times when people were buying ant eggs as staple food for goldfish Grin

YEAH, I suppose there was a time when goldfish food was not available and so I guess table scraps and any bugs caught might have been a staple fish food source. Smiley

They were usually kept in rather small setups, or big ponds, so I do believe they were doing fine Smiley Not as healthy as today though with all the über food and filtration for goldies Cheesy

perhaps the water was much cleaner without all them chemicals added, ar let's say more natural... peoplle bucketing it out of fountains, water holes, etc. No copper pipes and chemicals in it like today....
