Hi Gang!

My 60 gallon is all set up except for the filter. I'm waiting on my honey bunny to cut out the back of the cover so I can fit it in. I purchased the Marineland Penguin Biofilter 350. I also purchased the premium carbon  ammonia neutralizing blend filter media. According to Smith and Fosters website, they are saying I need 8 tablespoons per 10 gallons of water. that would be almost the entire container. I'm thinking that must be wrong. I put in 7 tablespoons and to me it looks like it's going to fit well.

Has anyone used this product? If so, how much of this filter media should I use?

My goldies 5 gallon tank is bare, and little Miss Teetsy, copped an attitude earlier when her daddy was talking to her. I swear she turned her back on us because we took all her pretty things out of her tank.

Wow, that seems like an awful lot.  You only need about a TBS per gallon of water of the premium carbon.
If you stuff your filter media too full with carbon the water won't filter through properly and then you will have water back splashing back into the tank instead of filtering through the media like it's suppose too.  It will result in cycling problems.
When it comes to the carbon, less is more and be sure to rinse it in syphoned dirty tank water first. Smiley

Maybe it would say something on the package? Anyway, I do agree with Minde that... it sounds pretty strange putting that much carbon in there!

i am back

stuff alot of filter floss in there screw the carbon dont need it for the most part( 2 get meds out) got to dollar store buy a some nlyon or plasic pot scubbers in thier for extra bio media the wheel works to but the more the better

thats what i have in my 55 gallon saltwater tank and i have a sm foxface sm french angel med naso tang and a md dog puffer and they have more waste than goldies and i have no ammonia   in my system i have the marine bio 350 with a crap diy  air protien skimmer

Good idea about the plastic scrubbie but have to make sure it doesn't have any soap with it...as some do but most do not!

I figured out the reason why I wasn't making any headway on getting the 60 gallon cycled was due to the ammonia/carbon fllter media. d*mb me, didn't realize it was taking out the ammonia. I pulled it out and my numbers are starting to climb. yippee. I want that tank cycled already. My tropical tank cycled really quick. The good news is, I realize that stuff works, so when the tank is totally cycled, I'm going to add it back in to both tanks.

When the tank will cycle, it will hardly be necessary to have the ammonia/carbon media Smiley You couldn't even use it while treating with medication due to the carbon in it! Unless your water supply contains lots of ammonia from the start.
It can most likely work as carbon is commonly used, after treatment. That could be good in case the beneficial bacteria would have been hurt.
