My plans
« on: February 20, 2012, 08:49:53 PM »

(I don't have a question, just sharing news and getting opinions, feel free to ignore this thread)
I am going to attempt to breed my ranchus in spring! This week I am preparing a breeding tank (30 gallons) and a fry tank (10 gallons). I also started doing water changes everyday from 20-50% as well as adding another airstone. The reason behind this is in the wild the carp live in rivers and in the sping current, airation and fresh water are increased when the snow melt. I am attempting to keep the tank on the cooler side so I can time the breeding with more precision but I'm not sure it will work since the ranchus lived in an outdoor "pond" until last week. I have not yet fed them live food, I think I'll start offering it daily next week. Most of what I've read says to place artifical "spawning mops" in the breeding tank but I'm thinking some pots of elodea might work better? Thoughts? Should the breeding tank be bare bottom? What about the fry tank? What am I missing?
I am so excited! Free ranchus to anyone in texas! Wish me luck.

Oh- in other breeding news, judging by body shape and vent shape it seems I have two male orandas and two females- how perfect is that?

I think elodea will work just as fine as a spawning mop, and bare-bottom is probably good for a spawning tank since the parents are supposed to be there only temporarily. I would suggest keeping the fry in the 30 gallon, you need to feed them at least six times a day and there will be leftovers so water changes will be needed. The bigger the tank, the smaller the chance of pollution and water quality problems.

Have you seen any breeding tubercles on your ranchus yet?

No tubercules yet but the females are all quite obviously filling with eggs. The importer was quite certain that Shoe is male...oh I really hope he is. I guess I will go ahead and plan on keeping them in the 30 gallon. I am keeping my eyes out for a 55-75 tank to keep the best quality ones when they start getting big.
fantailer- I do not have any quality telescopes to breed at this time.

Edit- Alas! Both the ranchus have convex vents!! Girls! I may go back in a few months when their ponds are warm and pick one that has tubercules present...

Breeding tubercules on Hazel! Now I am debating with myself... my books say to start breeding commons first- to get the hang of it, before trying to breed champions. What do you guys think? I have high-quality (if not show-quality) orandas to practice with...or my fantails, I am definetly not going to breed commons...
I also saw something pimple-like on Shoe's gill cover but I'm not sure...his/her wen grows everyday, it will have white and red spots that change overnight. Guess I just have to wait and see.
