well water

My family and I including my goldfish are temporarily moving to a farm that has well water and im wondering if well water is safe for goldfish if i treat it with conditioner. If not what other options do i have?

The water would be really hard but I don't know how to chage hardness.

Goldfish can't live in water from a softener. I've read this online, if you search on it you'll see the many articles about it.

I read on the internet that they can live in well water that is treated with conditioner. I also read that i should not use the well water that has been through a water softener? How does that sound? Correct me if im wrong. Please and thank you!

Do you have any faucets that aren't getting water from the softener? If not inside, maybe the spigot outside?

I'm not sure yet because we havnt moved out there yet but when were moving stuff I will make sure to find out! Thanks for your help! Any more advise u guys have will be greatly appreciated!! Smiley

i have seen tons of people that keep goldfish or koi. my dad has a lets says about 1000 gallon pond for ten years now always use well water and no conditioner some of his fish are 3 feet close to ten lbs u will be fine even saltwater fish are ok on well water remember that it is the city that adds choline and other crap to or water so  your well will have none of that in it

You never know what's in well water. I'd say, if you're not going to drink it, don't put it with your fish.
Well water could get polluted by various things around, in case there are metal pipes close to the well or it's made from materials that are leaking chemicals into the water.

Good rule of thumb really, ask your parents if it's drinkable.

Hey Nossie! Thanks for the advice. I think im just going to refrane from using the well water. Im just going to run into town and fill up buckets with town water from my friends house. I dont want to risk loosing my fishy friends! At least i wont be living at this farm house for very long! I cant wait to get back to living in town with good fresh water!

i agree if u can drink it its fine for fish most well water has to go thru filters manly uv filters or reverse osmosis then it would be better then city water.

a lot of people pay BIG money for those 2 things for a fish tank. it would be over 500$ to put them on a small tank

People who have well water usually add chemicals (including chlorine) to it and maintain it themselves so that it's drinkable.  So depending on where you are, it should be ok to use.  After you move in, check it with your test kit.  If you have a large tank, it will be a pain to keep getting large volumes of water from your friends house.

It's the water softener that would be harmful to the fish.
