I think with the air stones it also depends on the size/strength of the air flow. Because my spray bar faces the back of the tank and is mostly submerged, I found that having my two air stones, on either end of the tank and buried in gravel, makes a lot of surface movement at the top for gas exchange
But I agree with Nossie, they aren't necessary equipment at all, I only got mine originally, because the little tank I had before was having problems cycling, so I wanted to give it all the help I could give it. But now in the larger tank I just like the bubbles because they're pretty
