Poor georgie. I have been treating him for swim bladder for 4 days now. 3 of no food and started peas today and no improvement still flips on his back when he tries to stay still. As long as he's swimming he's ok but at rest belly up, poor baby so sad can tell he's frustrated. I sure hope it's not permanent, he is of the body type that is prone to it. Wish him luck guys, hate for him to live like this.

Poor Georgie! Did you try epsoms salts? 1/4 tsp per gallon of water and raising the temp to 80F?
You could try feeding him live foods such as daphnia, frozen baby brine shrimp, duckweed is good and steamed finely chopped spinach or zucchini. If not better in a few days, you could try an oral antibiotic, anti-bacterial medicated food. I use the one by Jungle and you can get it at Petsmart.

I do salt when I quarantine so got that covered. Thanks for other ideas on feeding him, I will try the spinach and zucchini but I am afraid of live food, had a friend who after feeding live food to fish she had for years and no new fish or plants had been put in for at least a year, well lost every one of her babies to a illness that had she us pretty sure came from live food. I have heard live food can carry pretty nasty stuff and I have no idea where to get some that I could trust to be safe. Do you think the frozen baby brine and daphnia would work? I could get one of those kits where you grow your own baby brine but not sure if that's safer or how long it takes? Do any of you grow your own baby brine? I would greatly prefer the frozen if you think it would work too. I feel so sorry for him. He finally figured out a way to float in a top corner to keep himself steady fir resting, and thank goodness he manages not to stick his fins or belly out of water (heard that can be bad for parts to be out of water for long time. I am really worried though he is not as active in past day (maybe he's just tired or finally can rest due to figuring out way to not float all over place). I turned water pressure down on filter and put a smaller bubbler, so there is less water movement and I think that's helping. Just hated to take that extra aeration from him. I so hope he gets over this. I am keeping his water very clean because I heard they prone to infection when they like this. I have I litte stunted oranda that is only about two inches and has permanent swim bladder that I could never cure, he can never right himself swims on side but he small enough that he either wedges himself under a bubble tube or goes and wiggles in corner behind eeyore who sleeps in the corner by a filter, so cute that eeyore let's him, nibbles used to have a buddy that would come and sleep on top of him to keep him steady but she died
. But nibbles seems perfectly happy the way he is but think it's worse for geogie because he so much bigger. I sure hope this isn't permanent. Going to buy some medicated food today. Thank goodness he is fine when he is swimming at least he has that.

Aimee,
You do not want to use Aquarium salt. Epsoms salt is different. If you try and drop piece in front of him he might eat a piece which would be beneficial since epsoms salts are used as laxatives. It is magnesium sulfate, white aquarium salt is sodium chloride. You can find epsoms salts anywhere like Walmart in the health and beauty section or pharmacy section right on the shelf.
Also what would be beneficial to the guy is if you can drop the water depth for him. This will take the pressue off the swim bladder and he might be able to expel some air.
As far a s frozen live foods, they are very clean. Hikari makes a great brand and so does Sallys. You can find them all in the freezer section by the fish at Petsmart.

Oh lol I feel like an id*ot never heard of Epsom salt for goldfish. I have the temp at 79 degrees for some reason my heater gets me 79 or jumps to 82 can't seem to level it out but have read on keepers that you can go to 84 when treating them. So scared to try the Epsom, is this something you have used for long time? And should I get aquarium salt out of tank before I use it? I was never going to use aquarium salt again because of stuff I have read about it but got desperate when he wasn't getting better. I have a fish pharmacist at fishyfarmacy that swears aquarium salt is slowly killing goldfish. Here is article he wrote (

) . I have used this fishyfarmacy for advice on certain things in past they have a free advice line and seem knowledgable. Also he will doesn't recommend you buying meds in advanced only as you need them because they lose potency with age. He could make so much more money if he didn't do business this way
Kindof makes me trust him more that he's not just in it fir money. I sat and asked him about like 5 different meds I was told were good to keep on hand that I was going to buy and he hold me no don't buy them wait if you need and then they can send you what needed asap depending on what shipping you use and urgency. But I just thought his article about aquarium salt ( not Epsom) was something some might be interested in reading. Thanks for your help hun.

I bought a whole kilogram of Epsom salts when I was treating my oranda, turned out I was a tad too late and he ended up having dropsy... Either way, you can ask for Magnesium Sulfate at the pharmacy
Other than that, Minde covered it. Remove some water so that you'll have a depth of about 10 inches of water or something in the tank.
Do you have any clues as to why he got this issue?

Yes , please take the aquarium salt, or most of it out of the tank....do a 75-90% water change before adding the epsoms salts.
I don't care what that guy says, I would rather keep meds on hand, just because when you have a sick fish, you just don't want to take time to go to the store. Besides the store for me is at least 1/2 hour away so an hour round trip.
I have used epsoms salts and it helps alot IF the swim bladder is not damaged and the fish is just constipated. I certainly wouldn't rule out bacterial or parasitic infection either. He could just have worms! I keep my one oranda with swim bladder issues on mostly a high vegetable diet and only feed him the sinking pellets but soaked in tank water. Also, a constant non-flucuating water temp helps him. I keep a heater in his tank and keep it at 72 degrees. He hasn't had another episode for months.
These are just some suggestions you can try. You shouldn't be afraid to use the Epsoms salts. Heck when you are finished treating, you can take a relaxing bath in them!
Also the treatment is for 4 days, then do a 50% water change and you can repeat the treatment with the epsom salts, you can also use the epsom salts with any anti bacterial or anti parasitic food you are feeding.
Just curious if you have ever tried any of Ken's products and if you have what you think of those?
I think every fish fancier should keep a medicine tub or first aid kit on hand for their goldfish.
I keep aquarium salt, epsom salt, anti parasitic food, anti bacterial food, melafix, pimafix, Methylene blue, rid Ich+, tetracycline hcl, on hand all the time. I just don't like driving an hour round trip while stressed about my fish being sick!

Oh yeah, yeah I LOVE Fishyfarmacy.
that's a great site.
Recently tho, I bought plants, a few months ago and 2 of my tanks broke out with ich from the plants!!
I had no idea ich would be carried in from plants!! Even tho I washed them off first, the ich was able to contaminate my tanks.
I tried Rid Ich + but this was a very resistant ich so I ended up treating with a progressive salt and heat treatment.
Well everyone survived, the ich was cured after 10 days and I'm happy to report no casualties from the ich!
So you're talking to a gal here who is an aquarium salt fan. I always use it when I get a new fish. And some medications you are treating with it will actually enhance. It gives a sick or stressed fish electrolytes, and also helps with gill function.
Used in the right way and at the right times it's certainly nice to have on hand.

I think he causes it. He is a fish that likes to go to top and beg for food and when he does he's getting air I think. He only does it when I come near tank, wants food and likes his little chin rubbed. But I have to try to break him of this. Very much a begger but his mouth open above water getting air when it comes to feeding time and now I know i am gonna have to get food in tank before he makes if up there and no more chin rubs:( I use sinking food but I am sure he was fed floating food as some point in life because of how he is. ) thanks for help all. I just took salt water out of tank, lowered water, and dropped temp. Going to get other stuff today.
As fir what I have on hand I have
Aquarium salt
Nitrofuracin green (for new fish in quarantine and healing wounds widely used for shipping fish)anti-microbial, anti-protozoan, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal.
De-Los fir parasites
Para guard
Copper safe and copper removal (afraid to use thus stuff)
Super ick cure
Quick cure
Garlic guard
It's the antibiotics the doc was mostly speaking of. The expensive ones have a short shelf life.
I have not bought any meds from goldfishconnection which is Rick. Ken is the auction part dandy orandas
But have heard good things and he sells this salad supreme stuff I
Plan on buying, people say their fish go gaga over.it has human grade kelp, algae, spirulina, mixed with fresh krill, cod, herring, salmon eggs and other stuff
Crypto pro for resistant strains of ick and

I'm going to order some of his stuff....That salad mix sounds amazingly good. I think my fish would love it too..
Oh yeah, I forgot I keep Paracide on hand, since the pond fish have occasionally come in with fish lice or gill flukes.

Check out the stuff called de-Los on Fishyfarmacy or wherever you can find it that's what I was recommended to get kills anchor worms, lice, gillflukes and other external parasites. Have used mine once when I had flashing fish and he stopped right after dosing. It's 1/2 pound for $16.98. Was told is better then prazi. Or just as good and cheaper. Prazi runs about $13.99 for 10 grams. And De-Los will kill fluke eggs but Prazi won't. 1/2 pound treats 908 gallons. So pretty much one time purchase lol. I don't know anything about paracide.

Lol pug would have been cute name. Or pugsly. I use either stresscoat+, prime or amquel. People who have lots of ammonia in the water supply swear by prime. And my favorite pet store says it's their best seller.
