Just Started Newbie, please help
« on: June 30, 2009, 08:34:06 PM »

Hi, I have been reading this forum and trying to raise some pet goldfish and it is quiet helpful. (I brought 4 fish 7 days ago(June 26), 2 died)
I followed some of the instructions. Like feed it twice per day fish flake/fish sticks?? (that long orange stick food that look like mini french fires)
Clean the water everyday (i have no filter) Use a tube and bucket
Use declorn that blue poweder 1 tbs per gl?
Put some water plant and some rocks

I would like to know if there is any extra thing or advice in case i go wrong
Also can you also tell me what type my fish are?

The middle picture looks like a fantail goldfish.  It's hard to tell with the bottom picture if the fish has a  dorsal fin or not. If it's dorsaless then it's either a lionhead or ranchu goldfish, otherwise it's another fantail probably.

Did you notice any strange behavior from the fish before they died, like darting around in the water in an erratic fashion? What about the fins and scales, do they appear normal on all the goldfish or do they look ragged. Healthy goldfish will actively move around while sick ones will not be very active. What about eating, are they all eating normally?

Thanks I will check on the brown one, I can barely see under them in the tank and i might need a magnifing glass to check but they look okayish.
I noticed the dead ones all tried to gulp for air above water sometimes is that normal. One that died look liked a koi or regular goldfish longish orange 8-10cm with red marks like birth marks over its body. It died with no fat belly one floated above the other fantail just stayed below like its sleeping. No darting around erratically. Only swiming little fast like tag sometimes.
Eating habit i usually soak the flakes and sticks until they get mushy and pour it in from the water cup. I am not sure what  you describe as normal but they charge the food and eat it like beggars(unitl all finish) sometimes only the fan tail rushes it and the lion takes a while to figure out i pour food in the water (sometimes it behaves like the fantail)

Your setup looks pretty good. I don't believe you did anything wrong since you're keeping the water clean and the fish are eating pretty well. My guess is the fish that died were already ill before you brought them home and their illness finally caught up to them. If you notice any symptoms, just post back here and we'll try and help you diagnose them.

You change the water every day? that is a death sentence to your fish if you do it wrong.
the reason i say this is because water from the tap has chlorine and other stuff in it that kills fish. NEVER put water from the tap directly into your tank, because the chance for your fish dying is very high.
this setup looks bad to me-there are so many problems it could have. the lack of filtration is the biggest problem because goldfish are so messy and produce so much waste per day. the fact that you have to clean the water every day is another issue- it could get expensive, and will freak your fish out after a while.
they also don't seem to have that many rocks to poke around in. goldfish love to do that, and it helps them because most sleep on the bottom of their tank at night. others will hover in the water about a 1/4 to 1/2 way up from the bottom.
if you are convinced this is a good setup(which i disagree with heavily) then you might want to get some sculptures or more plants for your fish to play in. a favorite of many goldfish is a big pot with two big holes in the sides they can swim through.
if you want an actual tank, and you have two fish, a 20-30 gallon tank should be sufficient if you want to replace your dead fish.

Asorvia,

Thank you for your concern, I actually stopped changing(cleaning it to be exact everyday and I use declor witht he water). I used to do it because i had no filter, now I got a sponge filter so I change about a gallon to half of water with the tube and bucket method. I also got some more underwater plants and put them together like what you said I should with a roller(no pots). I am also trying to get some rocks, not sure where, but I am trying. I am considering getting some scupltures or fake toys(rubber or plastic angel fish) but i cannot use a cave method becuase I got a Black moor and it says its dangerous to have those around because it is blasted blind(or terrible vison).
Thank you for the input and concern, I will post a new pic later so you could see if there is anything wrong with my modifications and set up
NB I used to do change water because I tuaght the water was flity and they were dying, until i realised i needed a air fliter
