filter question

I hope I'm not asking too many questions, but how hard and fast does a filter have to go? It seems every time Teetsy passes the filter bubbles, it just sweeps her away. I'm not sure if she enjoys the ride or not. Will the filter still pick up everything if it's not running hard? Thanks so much and I hope I'm not being an annoying new mommy.

What kind of filter is it? An internal, external?  Power filter?
How many gallons per hour of water does it turn over?

Oh yeah, that would help wouldn't it>  Shocked  It's a AQUA-Tech 5-15 POWER FILTER. Since this filter came with my aquarium starter kit, it did not come with any instructions.

Well Your tank is small at only 5 gallons, but I really feel that you really need the extra power to filtrate the water properly.
If your fish is being pushed around only when it goes by the filter then I wouldn't worry too much.  I guess if your fish did not care for it too much it probably would stay at the other side of the aquarium and avoid the filter all together. Smiley

I had a 5-10 filter on my 5 gallon that I kept guppies in at one time and they were fine with that filter. Smiley

I have that filter on my 10 gallon tank. It was also a kit that Walmart sells. It is a good little power filter considering how beaten the one I have is. My Niece let it run dry  Roll Eyes when she had the tank and fish last year. I've kept up with lots of water changes and replacing the filter cartridges. You can get a pack of 3 for under 10 bucks. Just don't make the mistake I did and rinse it out with tap water  Shocked as I washed away all the beneficial bacteria! It was with the help of the pro's on this forum that got my tail outta that bind. With time and great advice I built it back up again Cheesy The tank has become too small for my Ryukin goldfish and he is getting a new home in a few days! Yay!!!

General facts about filtration: The ideal force of a filter would be 10 times the tank volume or more, I myself have filtration worth about 8 times. But fancy goldfish generally don't like being blown around by the filter, and if it's too hard, they simply sit on the bottom to avoid it at all Smiley Some of my babies did at some point, so I turned one of my filters down a bit and aimed them differently so that they'll stir the surface and create currents, but not so strong as they'd force my children to hide Smiley
You can see yourself what fits your goldfish more Wink I have one that deliberately swims in front of the filter outtake and the air stone all the time and she seems to love being blown around by it xD Maybe it tickles her little fins Wink
