Sick fish
«
on:
September 06, 2010, 01:33:49 PM »
Hi my name is Evan and Im sure there is something wrong with my fish. Sometime he will just stop swimming and start swaying back and forth, and then he floats to the top and doesn't move for 5 seconds, then he just swims away. He's done this for about 2 weeks now and I don't know what's wrong.
It would be great if someone knew what was wrong!
Thanks,
Evan

Thats a toughy! The only suggestion i can give is to just watch him closely. Most people will probably suggest testing your water to see whats wrong with it. Sometimes certain things to high in the water can be harmful to your fish.

Mhm. Sounds like the nitrates are high. If the fish isn't showing any other signs, the one and only thing you should do is to test everything: pH, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate. If any of them are off, change about 50% of the water.
The reason why you have bad water has to be established as well. Think about how big your tank is, how many fish you keep there. What kind of filter you've got, how often and what amount of water do you change? What are you feeding them and how much? If something is strange here, you've got the reason why your fish acts weird, and you can easily fix it
So answer the questions and post numerical results of your water tests.

Correct, we do advise to test the water.
Reason: as soon as the fish behaves strange there is sth wrong with the environment they live in: the water.
sounds logical, doesn't it?
A healthy environment means healthy fish, an unhealthy one means the fish get stressed and sick.
So the basic rule kepp your water quality right and you will have happy and healthy fish, also provide the proper tank size, filtration and aeration.
Please test the water as Nossie requested, and post the numeric results, so we can help you further.
THANKS

Yes, TEST THE WATER!!!!!!
I wish would test their water before asking a question...*sigh
They might know the answer if something in the water parameters are just not right!

Have you added medicine or used a gravel vac lately it could make the fish float to take breathes of air. Or it has slight swim bladder disease and cure by giving it a defrosted, skinned pea. it should stop floating within 12 hours.

Ok, Goldfish do not "breathe" air.
The only way they can get oxygen is through the water period!
If a fish is hanging at the surface that means something is going on with your tank and you better do some water tests asap.
The biggest amount of oxygen is at the surface. This is where the gas exchanges take place.
That is why a bubbler is so important, to help in distributing the oxygen which disolves in the water, which the fish absorb through their gills.
Some fish like gouramis and bettas have a special organ that allows them to actually breathe air out of the water.

fantailer: OR when there are too high nitrates, sometimes it can have something to do with a pH crash as well. It's all about the water quality.

well first you need to check your water parameters.
Have you tested your water for ammonia, nitrites, pH and nitrates?
How long has your fish had swim bladder issues?
What do you feed your fish?
How much and how often?

I'm going to say: Test the water. You can't do anything else until that is done because it wouldn't help.
When the water's tested, and you've performed a water change as needed you can start taking care of the fish itself. their environment = Water, is an incredibly important aspect of fish health.
When this is all done, you may want to keep your fish from eating for a day or two and then feed him (and his tank mates) with only thawed, shelled peas for another few days.
If this won't work, you can go to the pharmacy and buy some Epsom salt (magnesium sulfate) and add that to a nice hospital tank where you put the affected fish.
And once the fish recovers, be sure you feed it a healthy, varied diet to avoid the same happening again

did you test the water for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate??? This is so important as most ilnesses come from poor water quality.
Please post numerical results.
It is very important to feed a varied diet. Here's the link:

Yes, peas must be thawed, shelled and cut into small pieces.

Get one before you do ANYTHING (
I MEAN ANYTHING
) else. It's the most important part of treating a fish.
Most people skip this and go straight to medicating because they can't understand how important it is to know if the fault can be repaired as easily as changing some water, and they end up killing their fish. It happens to most beginners, and I'm pretty sure I might have been one of those myself when I was dealing with the first fish.
