New fish at last! ;)
« on: June 15, 2011, 07:36:54 PM »

So I went to Petsmart and found two fish I was drawn to...a gold fantail with extraordinarily long fins for his size, and a white fish...I say just 'white fish' because I honestly can't decide what it is! The orange fantail I called Marigold and the white fish I called Priscilla Pearl. Pearl has the high-arched back of a ryukin and the deep belly, but it also seems as if she has a bit of wen on her head. I'm thinking she may be a cross? Anyways, enjoy the photos  Wink

Thanks MB Gold  Smiley She has a really short "buzz cut" of a wen, doesn't she? Of course, they're so young I can't perceive the genders...I can pretend lol.

For aesthetic reasons as well as personal preference, I usually try to choose fish that have a deeply clefted tail and both anal fins present. So Prissy wouldn't really measure up to the way show standards critique her, but I think she's adorable even so  Wink I wonder, is she a lemon-head oranda? She has the wen and a decisively yellowish white main color, but a few splotches of red... Roll Eyes

Marigold has maginificent finnage and an active personality. He (I'm guessing) has a bit of a small gash on one gill, but I'm not sure I want to give it the usual dose of hydrogen peroxide, considering where the abrasion is.

*sigh* I'm quite taken with them <3

I don't know about the lemon-head.

I always call mine boys or girls before I know, too Smiley  My Ziggy was Zelda til the breeding stars came in Cheesy  Pearl could definitely be a lemonhead, very jealous, they're on my wish list Wink  I had a Ryukin Oranda cross that was lovely, he had a slight hump and a smallish wen, not show quality, but pretty Smiley

Thank you all for the compliments  Cheesy MB Gold, I know right! I had a red cappede oranda who was so plump and cute I thought it HAD to be a girl...quite shocked when the breeding stars popped out!
I'm leaning towards the option that Pearl is a ryukin/oranda lemonhead. I've always wanted one; but around here the LFS only carries breeder's culls so they are usually too deformed to get. Never had one before, but I do think she is pretty, despite not having shows standards as far as body proportions and preferances. I wonder if, as a goldfish gets older, the tail proportions stay the same or get longer.

Lovely fish! Smiley Such huge eyes!!

However, Pearl is most likely not a lemon head oranda, all white fish usually have a yellowish color on their heads (and usually slightly on their fins as well). My Cream has a red spot on one of her pectoral fins (+ red eyes) and Honey has a white spot on one of his Wink They're opposite fishes! 8D So small red parts seem pretty common on white goldfish.

I'm pretty sure both are actually fantails, since a ryukin doesn't only have a deep body and arched back, but also a far more pronounced hump behind the head Smiley Pearl does have a kind of wide head that would fit a headgrowth though...

So she's not a lemon head? Awwww. Oh well, she's still super cute. You can't really tell in the photos, but she does have a headgrowth  Wink She measures from nose to base of tail about one inch long.

Can't tell for sure since I haven't really seen an actual lemon head, but... you'll probably notice when she'll grow bigger/older. In case the headgrowth will be looking more yellow or white c:

Thanks Ron!  Cheesy The big, innocent eyes just do me in, and I love the stocky build of the oranda.  Smiley

And thank you, Nossie, for the info. Her older sister was at the store as well and had a decisively yellow wen...I didn't get her because half of her tail was grossly mutated  Angry our LFS tends to get the culls, probably because they're cheaper.

Rather than give up fishkeeping (as I came very close to doing) I'm determined to re-stock. Though it was hard loosing my friends, I drove to the store again yesterday and picked up a beautiful oranda, a massive 2 1/2 inches long. Pretty sure it is a she by the vent. Will post pics as soon as I download them onto the computor... Smiley

The first 3 pictures of the comet goldfish are of them still in the bag before I put them in the pond. (Don't worry, I didn't keep them in there for long!) I named the red, black and white fish Coco and the white and red sarasa comet Spangled. The last 3 are of Topaz, who is now lovin' life in my main tank. Enjoy!

Thanks yous fantailer!   Wink Topaz's coloring has lightened up a bit since I took the photos...she's more of a brownish-gray, but she's getting along quite nicely with my others. Her two brothers at the store were trying to dominate the fish aisle by tearing everyone apart, while she was off foraging in the gravel by herself.  Cheesy

And thank you too, Ron! I love their bulbous lips too  Smiley They're very small but oh-so cute.  Cheesy

So very beautiful! Love their names too! Smiley

Did I mention that Freya has one of her anal fins strangely bended upwards and around her tail a bit. But it's not particularly visible. I was wondering if that's how she was born, or if she's been hurt sometime.

Thanks Nossie!  Smiley Smiley

Citrine l had that same thing with one of her anal fins...the strange curl around the outside of the tail...I'm pretty sure it's a genetic defect, though it could have healed differently if somebody chomped it.

p.s.: does Topaz have ryukin blood in her? She has a bit of a hump behind her head, though she has a wen. Just curious!  Wink

Maybe? The rule is that an oranda should have a very deep body, yet not that special hump, I don't really know actually! But I've seen a few ryukin/ranchu hybrids, and they looked pretty much rounder than this? Still such a lovely, lovely fish! Smiley I'm jealousssss!

Thank you Nossie!  Cheesy Smiley  Grin Maybe we'll know her definate breed when she's older.... she is the largest of all my fish currently; pushing 2 and 1/2 inches. Her belly is pretty plump, its a bit hard to tell in the photos, and she has a huge apetite...like my others lol.

And sad news, Priscilla Pearl passed away the other night. She developed very bad blood hemorhaging under her chin and by her dorsal fin, and also refused to eat. I tested the water but everything came out fine...I gave her a concentration of salt, epsom salt, and baking soda, but she showed no improvement. Shortly afterwards she died.  Cry R.I.P. my dear.

Poor thing Sad Maybe she had been carrying something since the shipping/her time at the shop :/
Sorry for your loss Sad

I don't know what's wrong, I had this period of time in the spring when many of my fish died too, Malone, Mr. Popo, Mr. Big... All within a month or so, and all without me really knowing why :/ Maybe this is your unlucky time? :C

That's what I'm thinking as well.  Sad Just the stress of being taken home in the bag and having to acclimate to a new tank probably was just too much for her, if she was already harboring something...

That's really sad about all of your fish passing away so close together!  Undecided Sort of like what's happening to me now, like you said about it being my unlucky time. Hopefully after this month things will take a turn for the better.

Thank you ever so much, Ron.  Smiley I figure it can only get better from here on out, but it may be best not to say that too soon. Hope all is going well with F.B., Bowie, and the rest of the crew.  Wink
