29 gallons is big but it may be a bit tight...as you probably know it is recommended to have 20 gallons for the first fish and then 10 gallons for each additional goldfish. That means you technically should have 40 gallons if you want 3 goldfish. So you are going to have roughly 10 gallons per fish if you plan on putting 3 in your 29 gallon.

I believe that fantails are one of the smaller breeds of fancy fish, but why not just give your 2 current goldies a nice, roomy home? Then they will grow fat and sassy without being stressed by overcrowding - and you won't be stressed about keeping on top of water parameters. 

When stocking goldfish, you should always think that 20 gallons is the minimum for one goldfish, but you can also keep two goldfish there and so have 10 gallons per fish.
If you are prepared to be taking good care of the water quality and maybe upgrading the filters in the 29, you can fit 3 goldfish in it

If I where you, I'd of course keep 2 orandas, since they grow really big, and they'd love the extra space in the 29 Or you could get another fantail friend for your current one and let the comet move into the bigger one with a buddy That would fit his need for room to swim a bit better

Nossie - that's a good idea. I'll probably follow your advice and get two orandas for the 29 gallon (I love orandas - if you couldn't tell, lol)

fantailer - my original pearlscale, i'm not exactly sure what happened. :/ I think it was an issue with the water quality, which I have since quickly cleared up

I see what you mean about the comet. What if I moved both Oreo and Trident (my current fantail and comet) to the 29 gallon and kept two new orandas in the 20 gallon?
