New fish tank. Little Carlos needed a bigger home :)
« on: February 07, 2012, 01:28:33 PM »

Recently come to the conclusion on here due to my Comet's strange behaviour that my current tank is too small for him.

Here's a picture of the fish tank set up and ready for him in a few days! Smiley

Can't wait to put him in and see what he thinks of it!

Here's a picture of him in his old tank his thoughts most probably 'let me get in!' haha Cheesy

Let me know what you think... Cool
My decorations to be added when they arrive in the post!

Oh yay, you got a new tank!  How big is it and how long has it been cycling, may I ask? The blue gravel is really fun; he should appreciate it!

I like the rainbow decoration as well.  Wouldn't it be neat to put a "sky" background on the tank?  Wink

I know I cant wait to put him in! Smiley

It is 48L so not massive but big enough for him to grow for now, cos hes not a big fish yet! I have had it set up for 2 days now, going to introduce him Friday as I have sold the old tank for then!

Yeah I thought blue and green are boy colours haha! Oh yeah that would be cool! Might look around for some fancy back grounds? Wink

So cute! Are you going to add any plants? Smiley Java ferns are really common, cheap and easy to care for, not to mention that goldfish think that they're disgusting Wink

Vicloz2006- Yeah I thought it was really cute and my last fish loved going under it, however Carlos is a little big to play with it haha! Cheesy

Nossie- Thanks, Im not sure yet, I have ordered a plastic one cos I liked the colour but Im a little cautions about adding real ones because last time I did I swear it gave my fish white spot? Oh thanks, I will check them out, are they the best ones?  Cool

Checked out java ferns and found some cheap ones! I am really keen to buy some but would like some advice about attaching them to rocks?
I have read you need to attach them to something to let the roots float, is this right?

Thanks

I don't anchor my java ferns. They are usually heavy enough and the gravel deep enough that I have had no issues and I have 13 fish that love to forage and are very active.

You should of course quarantine everything new you buy, plants included Smiley I once got a bunch of Java ferns from the community tank at my parents' place, so I kept them in a glass jar by the window, this way they would get sunlight, and I just topped up the water sometimes. Parasites will die if there are no host fish around Smiley

I just stick my ferns into the gravel actually, soon enough the roots will grow around a bunch of pebbles and they'll stay in place, I also have a few of them and anubias grown onto drift wood Smiley

Yeah you seemed to have been lucky with plants, im always scared my fish will start nibbling! Yeah would be great to see a picture! Smiley
Ive bought some java ferns, got them in a vase at the moment, Ill add them in a few days! Ill post a picture too! My tank is looking a bit crowded at the moment though because I had to buy Carlos a plant to hide under as he was getting stressed out in the lights in his new tank, which he loves, but its a little hideous  Undecided big plastic thing... Think a move around will be in order!

As long as you don't pay a huge amount for plants that you aren't sure on, it doesn't matter too much if they give it a bit of a nibble Smiley
So far the plants I buy are from a cheap little shop, that sells cabomba and elodea in bunches for 1.50
Lucky ate the cabomba I brought last year, it's still alive, just very bald and I brought a load of elodea to try out -they were on offer  Smiley - with the hopes that with lot's in there, Lucky couldn't possibly eat all of it at once Wink

Haha well the cabomba remains are hidden among the elodea, I'm wondering if it'll grow back XD
It is pretty much a small bushy part at the bottom with a green stem the rest of the way up now Roll Eyes

Naughty Lucky! I keep noticing Carlos having a cheeky bite of this new plant! Im not quite sure whether he's eating it or just having a suck? Theyre cheeky! I love watching him in his new tank, he loves it so much!  Cheesy Only thing is im sure he's grown already?!  Shocked
I love the new fish tank Skwishee just been checking it out on your thread! Looks amazing and Lucky will have so much fun swimming around in there, its huge for her! She'll definitely think shes in a river ha! Grin

Haha aww thank you cdale Cheesy

Yes Lucky is such a tiny thing in the tank isn't she?! I'm wondering when she'll grow, a little concerned about the stunting caused by being in the little tank, but time will tell. At least she has a proper sized home for a little while Smiley
Until she grows big enough for a pond, she is staying with me  Cheesy

As for the plant, you will know soon enough if his eating it Wink
I originally thought Lucky was only 'nibbling', I hadn't realised how un-bushy like the plant had become until I saw pictures of what a cabomba plant was supposed to look like  Roll Eyes

Yeah, I have found that he was eating the plant, Ive taken it out and think I might get another one, not too sure yet though! The tank is looking a little crowded to be honest!  Undecided

I wouldn't worry too much if he is eating the plant, it's just like a salad bar for the fish really  Grin
What plants did you add?

Yeah that's true! It wasn't very good quality to be honest... might buy another?

Cdale, I had the same problem with the cabomba, I've moved the last of it to the snails tank now, as I found it floating about the tank during maintenance yesterday, looking very sorry for itself XD

Give different plants a go, I've had better success with the elodea so far, it's growing nicely, so I'm hoping it can grow quick enough to keep up with Lucky Wink
