Aquarium Light

I have a generic fluorescent bulb in the hood of my aquarium, im not sure of the watt...anyways, I am wondering about the length of time to leave the light on/turn it off.  I have been leaving it on all day (7am-10pm) and turning it off when I go to sleep.  I dont know anything about this but is it bad to leave it on for that amount of time?  Do I need to turn it off?  Does it blind them? 

I realize these are probably idiotic questions but I want my fish to be as healthy as possible. thanks in advance Smiley

I usually leave my lights on for about 12 hours, give or take an hour.  I turn them on at 10 am and normally by 10 pm the fish look like they are starting to mellow for the night, but if they are still active, I'll give them an extra hour Wink

It sounds perfectly fine! However, in the long run, the bulb may encourage algae growth, so if you notice algae suddenly growing everywhere, it may be a good idea to start keeping the light on for an hour or two shorter.

Timers are cheap. $4 at Home Depot. Set it for about 10 hours a day and forget it.

Im with you Dragonii, Im a bit ir-regular with turning things on and off so timers are great... also I have two 15 watt lamps running for 12 hours a day on my tank, my nitrates are around .5ppm and after two weeks I can see the algae starting to build, so maybe I will go to 10 hours a day and see how that works... cheers all
