Betta Makeover
« on: December 21, 2010, 03:29:26 PM »

After getting bored with my recent betta bowls' decor, I resolved to redecorate using some old marbles and matching plastic plants. These fish are named Comet and Cupid (heehee got them around Christmas time), Comet being the male with long fins and lilac coloring and Cupid the hot pink and yellow female. Comet is roughly 3 years and 4 months, Cupid is a bit younger at 2 years 6 months. I spawned them both a long time ago, however the babies died from the cruddy water we have out here. Now they are in a blissful retirement with a devoted fish keeper to keep them happy.

Thank you Hanna and Oranda...Maybe one day I will attempt spawning them again...I think their children would be adorable! I've spawned bettas about 6 times, but never got the fry to live very long because the daddy always ate them.  Angry

They are each in their own separate gallon jar. They are enjoying life by the windowsil and have a large box in between them to avoid getting upset...when they see eachother they go crazy  Shocked

Heehee well I don't want to raise my bettas to be morally corrupt, right? Here's Comet's portrait.

Ok I will do that then to ease my conscience. I can't believe they acted out of the confines of matrimony :O bad bettas, very bad! Thanks Nossie! They are easy to photograph in the winter because the cold air makes them sleepy. Btw Comet has an earing. (just kidding, it's only part of his gill.)

Awwww thanks! Heehee when I first got her she was no larger than 1 1/2 cm and completely yellowish white. Now she is well over 2 inches and much more colorful. She also eats a ton. What captures me are her eyes; brown and rimmed with blue. She is also very smart, and has learned to come up to the surface and beg for food when I tap the glass softly.

Sorry for bragging about her  Roll Eyes

Thanksyous Nossie!!  Wink

I'm pondering the idea of spawning them again, but I'm afraid they're too old now. I once heard you shouldn't spawn bettas when they're over 14 months old. The article never listed a reason. When they see each other when I clean their bowls I feel so bad - they begin to pace back and forth and Comet starts flaring. Perhaps they both harbor an attatchment and spend each moment longing to be together again...I just long to reunite them!  Cheesy

So romantic Smiley

I have read a few things about breeding bettas, but that's pretty much only the basics. I haven't seen that being mentioned anywhere though, maybe it's written by someone with experience and noticed that maybe the offspring wouldn't be as beautiful if the parents would spawn late?

It's an unfinished love story  Tongue

Maybe so...or perhaps the quantity of offspring would be reduced as well as the quality. Or perhaps it would be harder on elderly betta parents to exert themselves so. I've observed bettas spawning and it looks like tricky work  Grin What's weird is that once they're done they always try to kill each other, leaving their relationship in shambles  Roll Eyes

Yeah, that's somewhat.... funny actually xD Sad in a way... I guess in nature the female could always attempt to escape since it's daddy's job to care for the kids Smiley But in a tank, well, that's a different story. Them fighting fish are fierce! :O

Oh yes its very true. But even if the parents killed each other in the wild the babies would still make it  Smiley so in the long run the mission was accomplished. Good ol' nature always knows what's she's doing I suppose. We humans have way more trouble trying to recreate her methods  Tongue
