New Set-up!!!

Since I finally have some time off school and work I was able to set up my new 125 gallon tank! I am so incredibley excited. Right now I have a Magnum 350 canister filter and an AquaClear 110 regular filter. I am going to have to order a second canister filter since I haven't been able to find the size I want. I think I'll add a few more plants, right now I have two tiny Anubis, three sword plants and there is a java fern attatched to that fake bamboo thing. Right now the water is still a bit cold (I used the outside hose) so I probably wont add the first few fish until tomorrow. Oh and considering the advice I got on here I decided to forgoe fishless cycling and instead bought tons of beneficial bacteria and used some established media. I am including a pic of the storage because I am just so psyched about it!

Oh my cowfish!! 125 gallons?! What a beast of a tank!!

Good luck with the cycling! I am sure the fish will love their new home!

Very nice!

A couple more plants will make it look more cozy though Wink

I use to get some huge bushes of Java Fern from the family tank, it grows like mad in there, so I've got a little forest in the background with those Grin

Maybe you'd also like to try the Cryptocoryne? These grow pretty tall, so it'd do great in the back of the tank as well

Nossie- Perhaps you can advise me on the plants- does Anubis need to be tied to something or just buried? I read that Java fern needs to be anchored but now I can't find where I read it to double-check.

Anubias will do best being grown on wood or rocks, just don't cover the roots and they'll be fine

You can try anchoring them in the gravel by partially covering their roots with pebbles until they spread and develop.
Java ferns work the same, but bigger ones will do fine being "planted" as usual since they're pretty heavy on their own.

Cheri nice looking tank, hope all goes well for you. I am sure it is going to make a very nice home for your fish, they will love it. The plants will come in time, & you will add a little at a time, then you find you have a mini forrest in your tank. Nossie has a very nice looking tank too.

New Plants. A few pics of Elder checking out the plants. Also got a bit of driftwood (man that's expensive! What I wouldn't give to live near a body of water!) I have never seen happier fish- they LOVE their new tank. I already changed about 40% of the water today because my cool new testing kit showed 1.0 ppm for ammonia, it was quite a chore and I have to climb a step ladder to dump the water in but at least I know it's doable. So far they only uprooted one sword plant so I weighted them with heavier pebbles.

Driftwood IS expensive Tongue

My chunk of wood (roughly 15 inches long) cost me 30€ ($45), but at least I'll be keeping it there for a while, and the suckermouth catfish love that wood Tongue

(as do the goldfish)
From what I've heard and read, one shouldn't collect driftwood from lakes and rivers around, since it can release a lot of toxins into the water even if it's been cleaned and soaked!
You never know where it's been or what's happened in that river >>

Wow I feel super lucky that I found a shop here (called The Range) that sells small - medium sized pieces of mopan driftwood for £1.99 a piece Shocked

I have heard of people using branches from woods, but I'm not sure how you'd ensure it was safe for the fish....

Many kinds of wood are toxic, so you'd better have a lot of experience with various woods before attempting to use them in the tank

Some even irritate your skin just by touching!

Ah yes especially trees like willow and things! I suppose it would take a lot of knowledge to select the correct type of branches!

Think I'll stick with the mopani driftwood Wink
