What to do with Goldfish That You Get From A Wedding?

As some of you may know, I am getting some Fantails soon. In July, my auntie is getting married and is having Goldfish as decoration on every table, and I am going to have some of them after the reception (as well as my cousins). I know, doing this is wrong and I should stop them having fish in the bowls because it's unfair. I've tried. So, since I'm going to be there mostly when setting up the tanks and such, because I have been doing research, I'm making sure the fish are cared for while at the reception. There lid to the bowl will be slightly ajar for the fish to get oxygen, but closed enough to stop drunken guests doing something st*pid with the fish. I know, I still feel sorry for the fish.
But, since I'll be taking a few home afterwards, I want to know what to do. Since my parents are the Best Man and Maid Of Honor, we'll probably be leaving last, and the reception will probably go on til early in the morning, so now Pet Shop's will be open round our area. So what do I do with my fish in the meantime after the reception? Do I get the tank well in advance and have it set up for the fish? And they will probably be stressed out, after being the center of attention of a table full of drunken parents and bratty children. So how do I make it comfortable?

I'm ashamed to say that my sil did this during at her wedding and most people left the fish there for them to take care of after the party was done. They ended up being taken back to the store. I don't think anybody hurt any fish, but there were some remarks about how cruel it was. A few were taken home, but a lot of those ended up dieing anyway. Getting a goldfish needs to be thought out and planned for because it's expensive, not something one is going to do on the spur of the moment at a reception. The fish that they will most likely get are going to be the feeder goldfish, and those end up getting really big and fast and don't mix well with fantails. Honestly, I wouldn't try and rescue them, because they may make it harder for you to take care of the fish you really want.
Floating candles look nice in bowls of water with fake plants...I would try and suggest that instead of the tacky goldfish.
Obviously trying to change someones mind about this is going to be quite difficult so a bucket of conditioned and de-chlored water might be handy. Put the ones that nobody wants in there, and take them to a store. Good luck!

I am planning, because I sort of want them. I'm not gonna mix the Fantails, the goldfish will be in the kitchen, the Fantails in my room. I am going to do whatever I can to stop them, and maybe we'll have to negotiate. I was thinking asking them to only having the fish on the top tables of close family, no other families.

Then you'd better grab a big, big tank already and get it cycling long before the wedding...
(I mean at least 75 gallons)
When I get married, I should buy a bunch of cats and keep them in big pots on the tables. It's basically the same

That's what I said, I asked them whether or not they would keep cats or dags or hamsters in pots on a table for decoration, and they just said lots of people keep fish and I said that doesn't make it right. I'm glad that I've got until July to talk them out of it, or if I can't, do lots of research.

Karma for saying something Cal! Good luck with talking them out of it.
Perhaps they could have glass ornaments of fish or something similar in the bowls, instead of live fish?
I might even put a thread together about common goldfish and what I've found researching them so far, if you'd like

I'll see if I can get something together, there's a lot of varying opinions.
I've found generally that common goldfish and most other single tailed goldfish really, are okay to be kept in aquaria as juveniles or young fish, but when they grow bigger the ideal situation is for them to be moved to a pond, so they can have the appropriate swimming space as they will grow pretty big -to around 30cm/10 inches.

I was gonna say something about this on the other thread, some people don't give animal welfare a second thought, and its such a shame (to me it says heaps about a persons character)... well done on saying something Cal_Fish, keep at it. maybe you can change their minds. Cheers > Ron
