Hey, this is so lovely
Well, I never heard about this before either... but... maybe it is true? I think regardless our fishies should enjoy those bigger waterchanges anyway.

They do!
And the more often they're done, the less the water quality deteriorates
But of course, it's only human not to want to do two 50% water changes a week d: Actually, it could be true, it sounds quite reasonable!
And since you heard it from professionals...

That's why I didn't get the gold ones, I thought it might fade into a more orangey colour which would be a very similar colour to Sunshine who is a really pale orange.
So annoyed right now. Just tried to help out someone I know on facebook who just brought a goldfish and is keeping it in a bowl, I try to be helpful and tell me the problem with this. Yet she uses the story everyone always does about how they know someone blah, blah, blah and she believes because it is so small it won't grow!!! Sigh, her argument also of why it's ok I quote "if he/she gets distressed, or too big, I'll get him a tank with a filter, but I'm still convinced if goldfish can live in some of the back yard ponds I've seen, this guy will function".
I just don't have the energy or will to bother anymore. I feel sorry for the fish but I'm not good at arguing with people well I don't like it. I sadly wait for the status update of the fish's death in a few days, weeks or month. Sigh
Oh and wait for it, the worst part is the fish guy at the pet shop said it was fine!! Seriously?

This girl has also previously managed to kill a betta
Sounds like this goldfish is totally going to survive, all I can do is wish her luck which is what I did if she won't listen.
Sorry guys, I just need to whinge to somebody, it really bothers me

Oh, man... Her fish will be dead in two weeks or something for sure! D: I mean, dear, if she managed to kill even a betta?! That's just sad. Just ignore her, and hope that she'll get so disappointed by the death of her fish, no matter how many she'll need to get for that, that she'll stop trying.
But it's nice of you to at least try

I just wish this people would listen instead of always coming up with excuses, like seriously who waits until their fish is on death's door until they say they will at least try to give it a good life!! I know what I'm talking about unlike this person who killed a betta and is now keeping a goldfish in a bowl because it is tiny
I dunno, at least you guys understand
I wish everyone who keeps a fish in a bowl could see the difference between Sunshine when she was in that 22L tank to how she is acting now. It's like she is a brand new fish and is completely loving life
It makes me so happy but I feel so sad for all this other fish. It's sad to think that when buying a fish I feel like I am saving a life instead of just buying a fish.
If it wasn't for the fact that a fish is going to be dead when that fish die's I would laugh in that girls face. She is more fascinated in being alternative and giving it a 'cool' name and how funny it is that is a goldfish though it's white
Ok gotta stop whinging
Going to go pick up my fish soon!

Oh, Andrea I can understand your feelings so well, unfortunately there are people out there they don't really care and they buy fish only because of prestige reasons...
like our fishguy told us he refused selling this woman goldfish ( she is a doctor, mind you ! ) because she came twice in a short period of time to buy a dozen goldfish at once, stating the fish died and she needs more. What she said when he refused selling to her : sth like " what are you worrying about I pay you, they are only goldfish, they don't last long. When they die I flush them down the toilet. We'll have a banquet tomorrow and I need goldfish to put in my tank to look nice for the people coming..."
This just makes me so angry too, you should think "educated" people would have more sense....but unfortunately some are more cruel than our brains can comprehend...
BTW Andrea, I posted on your facebook, I think I got you right on there, LOL

Andrea: To be honest, I feel the same d: Like the goldfish I bought were bought partly because they were too **** cute to let die!! It would be so great if people could realize that fish are just like a dog or a cat, but NO. Because the fish don't start whimpering and squealing when they're sick, nobody cares.
Hanna: A DOCTOR?! Did that?! :O I'm quite outraged. How angry it makes me!! Especially because I know crappy people like that |: People that do everything just to be liked by the ones they pick |:

Yes, Nossie... unfortunately this is true
If you see black clouds out there and thunder and lightening, this is me being so angry about things like this.
But this is not all: another story, that a joung male person wanted to buy 1 goldfish but didn't have a tank, he wanted it for that night only... perhaps to put it in a drink and swallow it down... how gross... and how st*pid and irresponsible some of the young generation are...

I accepted your friend request Hanna. Haha how random. I was like omg how does she know my last name?? That or she added every single Andrea in NSW
But then I realised you can find people through emails hehe.
I brought my new fish, she is named Clementine. A little black
common
, she was advertised as a comet but I swear she is a common with her little tail. But I am having problems and I'm worried sick
I'm going to post it in a new topic.
It is raining and cloudy here Hanna, I feel like it is definitely reflecting your feelings and mine too. I don't know too many bad stories thank god, besides that one person on facebook. But I'm sure there is plenty out there. I must say I love the sound of your fish guy Hanna. Good on him for refusing to sell to her. On the news the other day they were talking about making it a law that pet shop people will be able to refuse to sell animals to people if they don't think they have what it takes to look after them, I hope they are including fish in this.

I certainly would love it if they would make a law like that |:
BUT, I ALSO WANT A STAFF REQUIREMENT IN THE SHOPS!!!!! ALL THE STAFF SHOULD KNOW AT LEAST THE BASICS OF KEEPING ALL THE ANIMALS THERE PROPERLY!!!
I won't enjoy listening to another jack*ss person in the pet shop telling a newbie to feed her fish every second day. (this totally leads to over-feeding for an unexperienced person!!)

Thanks Andrea, yes it was by e-mail, lol.
And I am full for it to have a law like this passed, hopefully including fish, etc too.
Also I agree with Nossie: only experienced and knowledgeable staff should be allowed to work there.

I was told that too by a pet shop, to feed every other day, by the OWNER of the shop. They told me "a starving goldfish is a healthy goldfish". They told me that quote on two different visits, so probably telling everyone.
She couldn't even identify the gender.
I kind of wonder about their goldfish because they get a new supply every week, and I can't believe people are continually buying that many. I think they are dying at the store, and they can't even keep them alive for a week!

The problem with the staff walking around saying "feed them every other day" is that most people don't want to have their fish "starving" so they feed them too much the few times they feed. That's why it's naturally better to explain that feeding many times but small amounts is essential! Maybe it'd be a good idea telling them why as well, and people would get a better understanding for their fish and how they work. Leading to more people being successful when keeping fish d:
Seeing the gender on goldfish is something very hard, so it's understandable that someone who isn't keeping them him/herself wouldn't see the difference
Besides, the goldfish in pet shops use to be very young, so it'd be a waste of time trying to look on them.
