Towards the normal filter we put an airstone (about 20 cm long)  in our tank.
Our goldfish just love the air bubbles and dive into them and let themselves float to the surface,
dive back, float up. They do not do it all the time but quite a bit.

Should we turn the airstone pump off during the night so they can rest and "sleep" - if fish do sleep ? -
or should we keep it running all the time?

Is there "cold" aquarium lights available, as we noticed that our lamp produces warmth and heats the water up to 28 C.

Here's what I think:

Keep the airstone running. That's what I do. It keeps the tank well oxygenated and it doesnt bother the fish when they do 'sleep'.

Second, I believe there are low energy lights that do not create as much heat. I'm pretty sure you can find them at a pet store near you.

Yes, I agree with Katarine.  Keep the extra air running all night. 
If you have real plants they compete for oxygen with the fish after the tank lights are out....no more photosynthesis.
Also, they do make a flourescent bulb for incandescent bulb tanks.  I know they sell these bulbs at walmart for about $5 each.

BIG THANKS,

came back from a petshop, the lady there said we should not change the light, as comets are very hardy in taking different temeratures.... well, I am not sure about this, I would prefer lower temps for Humphrey and Hepsiba.
Will go to other petshops too. If I can't get a light for the AquaOne 380 I will get a chiller.
They do not sell lights at our K-Mart -should be the same like your Walmart- but I may have a browse at BigW too.

Anyway, at Bunnings we got an early Easter present for our fishies  Wink, lovely clear coloured glass pebbles.

Even if most varieties of goldfish ARE hardy and can easily survive both in warmer and colder temps, it's still stressful for the fish with constant temperature changes! Since the water cools down over night and gets heated again in the morning and cools down in the evening... well, you get my point! (:
And I noticed that it's not always that wonderful to listen to pet shop people. Not all of them have too much experience with fish after all.

Hi Nossie,

I agree. I'd prefer to have constant and lower temperature too.
By the way, all is prepared for tomorrow water change: fresh water, I added Agar and Algae controll, checked ph it is about 7,2 now.

Do you have a gravel vacuum cleaner?    I do not mean the fish, lol

I got that gravel vacuum cleaner (the larger size) and I'd say it's a must, mostly 'cos down in the gravel is where a lot of the poop ends up, but also, for water changes, it's ridiculously helpful.....I just tried cutting a piece of garden hose and attaching it to the end of the hose coming from the vacuum and running it straight out the front door, outside down into the planted perimeter of the interior "courtyard" area of the complex (we're on the 2nd level up, so that's helpful) but it drained 25% of a 60 gallon tank in about 4 minutes, (which was so much better than trying not to spill the poopy water as I carried a 5 gallon bucketful to the toilet) so I would highly recommend those gravel vacuums..... Grin   (whew! that was a fingerful.)

Sometime you might want to check on a water changer.  It vacuums the gravel as well as changes the water and just hooks up to most sinks.  I have one by aqueon and I love it.  It has a 50 ft. hose so I can change water in any tank and any room! It has an on off switch right on the vacuum and then at the faucet so you can either take water/vacuum gravel or replace the water in one easy step and the flip of a switch.  I know they sell a smaller one in 25 ft. size.  Once I started using this I would never clean my tanks any other way, it cuts down my cleaning to a few minutes.

At home we always used one to change the water, and it was most useful! It's such a simple thing, cheap and so easy to use that it's almost ridiculous! Cheesy
And I must say that now after I moved (and I don't have one of my own) I am suffering a little bit... :' D I only have a normal hose now so I can't really clean the gravel. Which is some funny ceramic media anyway so it'd just get stuck everywhere.

Can't wait to get that bigger tank AND gravel cleaner for the summer! Cheesy

If you can't clean the gravel then that might be why your nitrates are so high.

after having brekkie  (Australian slang for breakfast) I get myself ready to clean the tank and do a 30% water change... must not go to work today, got a rostered day off, so beside household duties I can be arround our babies.
