newbie filter and light question

Just setting up my new tank, and am baffled by all the filter outlet attachments... duckbill, venturi, straight, reducer... how do I know which to use?
also, possibly a daft question - should I turn the light off at night time?

I'm not sure...I'm not familiar with the terms..duckbill...venturi  etc.... couldn't post a picture of it, could you?
Definately turn the lights off at night!

Don't leave your lights on for more than 12 hours a day. You probably only need to have them on for 8 hours if you don't have a lot of high light demanding plants.
Also too much light can grow extreme amounts of algae. So you will have to experiment and see how much light is best suited to your tank.

I use an electronic timer with my lights so that they turn on and off at the same time everyday Smiley

You know what? Nevermind all those weird names, just get yourself a filter of the correct size, and be happy with it, nothing matters except how much water the filter turns per hour and how much biological filter media there is.
Go for something with more biological filtration, that's the most useful one when keeping goldfish.

And the light question has been answered. Turn it off after circa 12 hours.

Turn it of when it gets dark and turn it one when the sun comes out. If you don't your fish will get exhausted and you will have a lot of algea!
