Now I Need Help Please! UPDATE!
« on: December 03, 2010, 10:18:54 AM »

First here are pictures of Cali my baby calico oranda I bought yesterday out of pity, who was lying on the bottom of the tank and being eaten alive by fellow tank mates.

I am treating her with aquarium salt, nitrofurazone, furazolidone and potassium dichromate, in the tank water.
I am also, treating her with an antibiotic oral food which contains sodium sulfathiazole and nitrofurazone.

My question is should I also, now at the same time add to the water tetracycline HCL or wait until the four days of treatment with the water treatment currently using and then do water change and use the tetracycline HCL for a week but I would keep feeding the oral antibiotic food.
I'm also thinking of taking her out and treating her with mercurachrome on her shredded fins and wounds.

Does anyone have any suggestions or advice!  ALL and ANY is welcome.
(I know some of you are thinking flush her!) Roll Eyes

Currently she is eating and swimming normally.  When I first brought her home she just laid on the bottom all day but started eating and swimming around a bit last night.  This morning I was a fraid to look but she saw me and zoomed over to the front of the tank.  She's so cute in an ugly sort of way, I hope she lives.  she seesms to be a fighter so as long as she is willing to fight to get well I am willing to help her. I would use the tetracycline seperately, lest you risk an unwanted chemical reaction. Smiley Im glad you picked that little baby up, shes ugly, but has a sweet face

She's the sweetest little fishie! Smiley But them fins look really bad Undecided

If I were you, I'd skip on adding the water treatment you mentioned, and just swab the merchurochrome on her wounds and fins then leave her alone, perform water changes when needed and keep up the medication in the tank Smiley

I really hope she'll be alright! Smiley

Awww...thanx you guyz I hope she'll make it too. Smiley
crap I got attached already!! Undecided
Yeah I think I will just do this treatment and then I will do the Tetracycline hcl if she is still not better.
She hasn't sat on the bottom of the tank once today so far!  I'm thrilled she is up and swimming.
I feed her the antibiotic fish food exclusively and a bit every few hours or so since she is so very tiny. Smiley
She eats hugrily each time.
I just have to be patient and see if this treament will work.
I wanted to paint her fins with the mecurachrome but I'm scared it will stress her so bad she will go into shock.
I'm sure it was so stressful yesterday being caught with a net, then dumped in a bag and then a 1 1/2 hour drive home, then an acclimation to a new environment and then on top of all that being so sick! :'(  can you imagine?  Poor poor sweet thing. Sad

Mindemae: You have a heart of gold. Smiley
I'm fairly new to give a sound advice but I would say do the Tetracycline after you're done with the current treatment. Smiley
Tetracycline is like Maracyn 2? That's what I had to use to treat my Oranda with her fin rot. I just followed the direction on the medicine and it worked!  Lily is now a happy and healthy Tancho Oranda. Smiley

Yes, I believe so.  I buy my tetracycline from the farm store in pouches and measure the right amount to treat.
I've treated with it before successfully.  But I just am so scared that i'm treating with not the right thing, ya know?
Sometimes it's a crap shoot to pick the right meds! Wink
I just have to calm down, and be patient!  Not my best virtue.
I just really appreciate all your support and friendship!  Thank you! Smiley

Mindemae, first of all another Karma for you, with your big heart, also as Nossie said there is an improvement this means you just do the right things. And it is such a good thing to hear that she's eating and swimming normally now. HOORAY Smiley

Tetracycline is an broad spectrum antibiotics. But I agree with everybody else, not to use it yet.
According to her fins, maybe you stick with Pimafix, Melafix for now, if there is no improvement in a couple of days, do it then. She sure will be strong enaough by then, eating that good.

And UGLY ?  No, not at all. To me she is a sweet, cute  little baby.

Keep us updated please.

What a precious little baby. Minde I am so touched that you have taken this gentle soul under your caring wing. Another 'Angel' fish Mummy ♥ right here. Actually brings tears to my eyes how kind so many of you are to your babies and gives me hope - thank you. May only the best come to you and your sick little one remembering how much you devote your heart to this endeavour. Oh and sparkling karma for you too!

Awww...thanx April! Smiley
But really all of you would have done the same thing!  And I know some of you already have! Wink
Thank you for your support and kind words! Smiley
I'll keep you updated day by day!
Do I dare hope?  Just since taking those pictures this morning I see less red/bloody streaks in the fins!

What a sweet little girl ♥
I don't know that much about those meds but when one of my fish had tail rot a while ago I used pimafix and melafix and it worked wonders! But if your seeing an improvement then I would stick with what your doing! Plus the tail rot and fin rot was probably due to bad water quality so being in a tank with good quality will help immensely.
*fingers crossed* that she will recover Smiley

I just noticed that her head- and body shape looks a bit like my Berry Smiley

But, in this case, I think Melafix/Pimafix would have minimum to no effect at all. Better use some "real" medications like you're doing.

I agree Nossie, that I don't think that Melafix or Pimafix would have any effect on such a sick fish at this point.
I might use Melafix when I am done with the other meds.
I didn't like the sore on her back and side.  It was still red last night so fed her some food mixed with the tetracycline HCL.
She gobbled it up no problem so fed her some more this am and some of the antibiotic food like you have...LOL she ate that too!
Now this afternoon the redness is gone from the sore and it looks better!
She might need a double antibiotic to fight this.
I also added the Kordon Fish Protector with the Vitamin B12 and echineacea in it.
I wonder if her fins will grow back? Smiley

IT SOUNDS GREAT! Grin

I'm so glad to hear this! Cheesy Congrats, Minde Wink

Now about her fins... I'm pretty sure her dorsal will grow back more or less Smiley But the rays on the tail look pretty bad... But who knows? They may just grow back after a few months Smiley If I remember correctly, Berry was missing a part of the front ray on her dorsal, but her fins look just perfect now! Smiley All the previously missing pieces are back in place Wink

Give her time, and I bet she'll grow to be a wonderful, gorgeous Oranda Smiley

Minde, this is very good news, Like Nossie you are a fishexpert too, much more experienced with treating fish, than I am.... but learning reading your both posts

I hope too, that her fin will grow back. (like Barbarossas fins did, they are longer and bigger now than they were when Yoyo nipped them off)

And you used Betta fix on him?
Hmm...I'll have to remember to pick that up incase one of my bettas gets injured or sick. Smiley
I do not have any bettas meds in the house.  I really should.  Always should keep meds on hand. Wink

Yes, Minde, I did, but first I used Melafix, as we didn't have Bettafix either. Bought is straight away that day and I continued treating with Bettafix.

Hanna: I don't know if it will sound strange or something, but it's a good thing not to be experienced with treating sick fish Smiley That simply means that you're doing a great job with keeping them healthy! Cheesy And that's what's most important when it comes to fish-keeping Smiley Karma to that! Cheesy

Tankies Nossie, no it doesn't sound strange... it is only that I am scared in case sth happens... and sth can happen to the most experienced aquarist....which I am not, for sure

But you know how to keep the fish healthy, and I'm pretty sure that's at least 90% of the job Smiley Besides, if something would ever happen, you have tons of knowledge to use! And you can always come here to the forum for help Wink

I haven't really treated anything worse than fin rot, small wounds and constipation so far! xD (Well, I did try with dropsy I guess....) But as far as I know, I never bumped into any parasites yet for example, so they'd probably have me completely clueless D:

I think it's good to have the experience.
The more sick fish I come across the more knowledgeable I'll be.
It's one thing reading in a book but to have the hands on experience is a whole different experience.
I'm seriously thinking of going to the petshop and buying inexpensive fish with problems and treating them.
Then when they are well I could give them away to a good home. Smiley

Of course it's better to have the experience, but in a completely different way better than simply not needing to treat your fish Smiley
I am grateful for what I've learned, but I do feel like the price I had to pay for them was too high Sad Two beautiful, beautiful orandas Cry

I know what you're saying Nossie and it is so sad you lost them but I look at like losing Blossom as a learning experience.
I play the what if game alot.  Like what if I had done this differently etc.  I really hadn't a clue that you could have a bacterial infection at the same time as having ich and what to treat both with.  I learn alot but it is a big price to pay even priceless since the love you have for them , you couldn't put a price on.  But I can't help wondering if maybe the next time or the next one maybe I could do better and save it. I am sorry if I am not doing this correctly, but I do need help. I have 2 goldfish in a 20 gallon tank. They are about six inches long. I have had them since they were babies. They have always seemed healthy except for yesterday, when one of them flipped over on his back and pretty much stays that way. he usually remains on the bottom and is still breathing. Every once in a while he will swim around the tank normally. Please what can I do if anything? Thank you

Most probably swim bladder disease, which likely means the fish is constipated. I guess you should isolate the fish, starve it for a few days then feed it green peas. Make sure you take the shell off first. (it is called a shell right??!??)
