Odd goldfish fry
« on: May 16, 2013, 11:22:04 PM »

I'm taking care of about 40 goldfish fry and today I noticed that one was very different than the others. I'm not sure who the mother of these babies are because I found the eggs in my fountain one day, but they are either common or comet. Well one of them has bubble cheeks and a bubble underbelly. I've also noticed that his body is curved more upward. Besides some mutation in its gene or one of my goldfish being a carrier of whatever gene causes bubbles, I have no idea how this happened. I scrutinized all the others and he's the only one who has bubbles. This is my first time raising fry, has this ever happened to anyone before? Do you think he's a defective fry? He seems to be doing fine despite his oddities.

It's possible that the fry is defective, I have a goldfish who's dorsal fin has a chunk missing, which I can only assume she's had since being born.

Some breeders cull fry if it appears to have defects, but I am afraid I do not know anything about breeding to know how they choose what to cull and the reasons why.

I breed livebearers and have never had to cull a fry. I have had some with slight defects like a curvature in the spine but nothing major. All I can suggest is, if it can still swim and get food I would leave it. I don't know if you plan on regaining the others but if you are I don't think anyone would want it unfortunatly so you may end up keeping it, if you feel you have space keep it failing that try rehoming on a fish forum see if some kind person would take it on.
