Old disease.

Over a year ago a goldfish I had named Orlando came down with what I thought was fin rot. I took pictures of him and took them to my local fish store and they could not tell me what was wrong with him. I was told to treat him like it was fin rot anyways. He just got worse and worse and 2 weeks later, he died. I had my water tested and it was fine and my other fish did not die. Can any one tell me what this is?? I won Orlando at the fair and had him for years and it broke my heart to see him suffering.

These pictures were taken after he died.

I'm not sure what that is, but I checked the petgoldfish web site in the disease section, and maybe it's an ulcer.
Here's the description they have:

   
    "Ulcers

    Ulcers are infections that often start inside the fish and then manifest themselves as red ulcers and boils at
    the bases of the fins.

    Ulcers can occur as a result of poor water quality."


The best thing you can do for your remaining fish is to make sure the water quality is as perfect as you can.  Also if you search the web for fish diseases, they usually have pictures of them.

This happened over a year ago. All my other fish lived and I had my water tested and it was perfect. Maybe it was an ulcer? Very strange though.

After looking more into the ulcer I don't think that's it. An ulcer looks more like a sore. Orlando just looked like his scales had been pulled off and all his meat was showing.

This looks like it was some type of infection, doesn't look like an ulcer to me either.  It almost looks like a bad bacterial infection set in.

It looks a lot like some type of fin rot that was left untreated properly, but as long as the other fish are alright, you should be happy Smiley
And for future reference, most people at pet shops have no idea what they're talking about, so the best thing you could do would be to check the symptoms out yourself and just ask them which medications you can use against what if you need to.
