New filter=goldfish gulping air?!?!

I currently have one telescope eye goldfish in a 10 gallon tank. Today, I found that my second goldfish had died(RIP TweEk<3). Now, when I bought the fish, the fish man at the pet store told me that a 10 gallon tank, for two goldfish, without a filter, would be fine as long as I took care of it. At this point, I realize that the above is incorrect, and just bought a filter for the tank. I purchased a Tetra Whisper Internal Power Filter for 2-10 gallon aquariums. When I got home, and began setting the filter up, Pinto, my last fish, was fine. Very soon after, she began sitting at the surface, gulping at air. That was an hour ago, and she's still doing it. Why the fluff is she doing this?Huh?

Did you clean the filter carefully under the tap/in a bucket of old tank water before putting it in the tank? There could be some harmful chemicals stuck on the filter and in the filter media from manufacture. Did you get any carbon? It's always a good idea to filter with carbon the first two weeks when having a new filter, just in case Smiley
The filter sounds very small though, it would be better to have something for 10 gallons and up, but wait and see! If you'll have good water quality with it, it'll be fine Smiley Just do small and frequent water changes for a while now so it can cycle Smiley
Buy some beneficial bacteria and add to the filter every water change or according to the instructions on the bottle.

What kind of bacteria should I get, because my and my dad were really confused by the options??

A product named Prime is great during the beginning of the cycling process.  It'll neutralize ammonia and nitrites until your tank is fully cycled.

You should do extra water changes during this cycling period, too.  I wonder if your water was dirty before you added the filter, and the filter stirred it up too much?  Have you tested the water?

I have started using a product by Easy Life called "Fluid bio filter media". It helped cycle my 83 gal in 10 days Wink
It also protects the fish during the cycling, so it'll definitely help Smiley It sort of supports their healing small wounds and keeps them less stressed. Which would definitely be needed while the ammonia is present and you having to change the water so often!
