I have a small oranda goldfish that I have had for about a year. I would like to get him a peaceful tank buddy. I do not want another goldfish. I know my options aren't many when it comes to goldfish tank mates, but I was hoping someone out there would know of some kind of peaceful small fish I could put in with my oranda? The oranda is not aggressive and does have an occasional swimbladder problem, this supports my need for a peaceful tank mate.

Another quick question. Does anyone know if Petsmart or maybe even Walmart carries a sinking pellet goldfish food?

Both Walmart and Petsmart or any store that carries fish supplies carry various brands of sinking goldfish food.

As far as a peaceful tank mate for your goldfish, I would only put another egg  body shaped goldfish with dorsal fin, in with your oranda.

Thanks for the help. Would a black moor be a suitable tank mate? How fast does the black moor grow? Can they eat goldfish food?

Another question: How many goldfish could safely occupy a 47 or 55 gallon tank?

A black moor would be an excellent choice for your fish to have as a friend! Smiley Please remember to quarantine your new fish first for a week or two to make sure you don't pass any diseases or parasites to your oranda.
A Black Moor will eat anything your oranda does since they are both goldfish.  The sinking pellets would be a great staple diet with some frozen peas with the skin taken off, maybe some freeze dried shrimp or worms, even some chopped spinach or romaine lettuce or some zucchini can be given to them once in awhile as a treat.
As far as tank size I would say for the fancier goldfish you are planning on keeping that no more than 4 to the 46 gallon and 5 would probably live quite comfortably in the 55 gallon.  Remember that overcrowding will cause extra work for you to keep the tank clean and you might end up having to do water changes more often than once a week.
Good luck with your new fish and please post a picture when you can! Cheesy

Petsmart and Petco will probably carry most brand of goldfish pellets or flakes, but the choices will be a little more limited at Walmart. But i like the cheaper prices at Walmart if the items are available there.

Black moors and fantails grow at about the same rate, depending on what you feed them. Higher protein content will result in faster growth , but this is not always the best thing.
