Carnival Goldfish

We have two goldfish from a carnival and want to set them up. We don't want to spend lots of money since we doubt they will live very long.
We have hard water. Can we just let it sit to get to room temperature and put them in? I remember we us to put the plastic bag in the water so the fish can adjust to the temp. Is that still correct? Or should we used regular bottled water? Is there something to put in the water?
I just have a small bowl to put them in. I don't want the whole aquarium set up. Will that work until we see if my kids can look after them?

Most city water will have chlorine added to them at the treatment plant and will require about 24 hours for the chlorine to evaporate if you leave them in an opened container.  If you use well water, then this is not a problem.

The temperature of the water the fish is in and the new water should be about the same, that way it doesn't shock the fish.  Goldfish will tolerate hard water ok but the hardness should not exceed 8.0. They like a pH hardness around 7.2 - 7.5  .

We got a goldfish from a carnival.  We thought as you did.  The fish would not live very long.  We bought it a nice goldfish bowl etc.  Well that was at least a month ago  Cheesy  This fish has grown a lot.  Now, he is too big for his bowl.  My husband and I just bought our three year old daughter an aquarium   Cheesy  You are right, usually carnival fish do not live for very long.  However ours is still going strong.  I am now learning how to take care of an aquarium, which is turning out to be harder than I thought.

All mine are from the carnival too lol. I thought they wouldnt last over night they just looked unhealthy. But here we are the first set are 2 years old, and the second set are a yr old , we resently got the new 2. The first 2 went from a small bowl to an aquarium, and now we just moved them to a small pond outside . They seem to be doing great. Didnt expect to have them this long. Grin

i just got a goldfish and it wont eat any type of food! we have tried the little brown food and the flakes. i've been reading different tips on the internet. by big question is how often i feed it!   Huh

Emma, you should feed your goldfish about 2 to 3 times a day and only what it can eat in a few minutes. Overfeeding can cause the water to become polluted and thus requiring a lot of water changes. Do you know what the temperature of your water? Goldfish are cold water fish , and they will be more likely to feed if the water is at least 70'F .

My son won a goldfish from the carnival too and I thought for sure it wasn't going to live long.  It's still alive a year later!  I ended up becoming more attached to it than my son and so I've been taking care of it.  It's a little one so it's in a 6 gallon for now.  I put a dechlorinator in the water.  Water temp is at 72 F.
