Oranda swim bladder

I have an Oranda, Baby, I have had him for over a year now. I got him very small and now he is bigger.  He lives in a 120 tank with a pleco, 20 danios, 4 fan tailed gold fish.  Everything was great, and he suddenly started to swim upside down. I have had Orandas before that died from swim bladder issues, so I am aware of it. In fact I feed him food that sinks so he doesn't gulp any extra air in- I removed him and put him in my 10 gallon hosp. tank.  It has filteration on it.  I have fed him peas for 5 days (shelled) Removed filter and added melafix, pimafix, and salt.  PH and nitrate are at good levels.  I plan to get medicated food and give to him.  He sits on bottom of tank and when he does swim it is more like he does summersaults.  On his right side he is swollen about twice the side of his left side.  It has gone down alitte but still swelled up on one side.  Any suggestions?

As far as I know, this swelling and sitting on the bottom could be caused by pretty many things, it could be a tumor, worms, internal infection, or some kind of parasites. (Water quality might also be the cause, but since you said that yours is fine, I won't mention it.)

I don't think tumors are very possible, and neither are parasites, if none of your other fish are affected. (This kind of parasites can cause some kind of swellings on the inside organs of the fish which can show through the skin. They may also show on the outside of the skin as some yellowish white cysts on the skin, fins, gills or in the muscles.)

I would dare to bet that the bacterial infection is the cause, since this can cause similar symptoms as swim bladder issues
Internal infections are usually best dealt with through medicated food or injections of antibiotics, but it could be too late if he's getting swollen.
So just get the medicated food and make sure that he eats it. It could be good to isolate him from the others to make sure that no one else will take his food.

Most times swim bladder desease is caused by  or indicates the presence of another problem. Some reasons could be constipation, serious bacterial or parasitic infection, poor diet or rapid fluctuations in temperature.
Two more reasons can be cancer or tuberculosis or a congenitally deformed bladder
We hope those are NOT the case.

Please make sure your fish is not constipated, ... so no food for a couple of days. Then peas. Maybe you treat with Pimafix and a good salt tonic ( follow the instructions, please )
Also check the temp and keep it stable for your fishy. Some also recommend live food as a change of diet, just ask your pet shop.

Here is a list of more symptoms:
-Goldfish is floating
-floating at the top of the tank
-floating at 45 degrees
-he is swimming lobsided or upside down
-tilted position or flipped over
-fish has got uncontrolled swimming
-fish cannot swim
-broken blood vessels in its dorsal fin

hey, i cured my Ranchu's swimbladder problem so I am going to share some pointers:

- stop feeding it with normal food and replace it with peas as suggested above
- i used Interpet's #13 Swimbladder Treatment. follow the instructions thoroughly and hopefully your fish will recover.
- i also use aquarium salt to lower the abundance of bacteria in the water.

Well Baby is still going. He just sits on bottom of tank and looks around with his big eyes.  I was worried about constipation, so I stopped food and went to peas for a week, just yesturday I gave him some blood worms. Had to order food w/ antibiotic in it, stores just do not have it. it will not be here till next week.  I did Pimafix and melafix, salt Monday, put a internal/external fiz tab in tank (he is in a 10 gallon tank alone) today. Did another water test today- still perfect. I have not seen him poop- is there something else other then peas that will help him poop? Ug, so helpless!

I do understand your feelings.

But Baby may poop when you do not see it, unless you watch him 24/7
A healthy poop will break off pretty quick, it does not trail too long behind him.
If it happens to see him pooping, watch how his poo looks like. Search the net for "goldfish poop" there will be a few sites there if you google it.

Every time I am near our tank I do watch if I can see our fishies pooping and I am always glad if I can see sth healthy there, but at the same time it often happens that they do not poo when I am just there.

Continue treating with Pimafix & Melafix and feed peas.

Keep fingers crossed for Baby.

Once saw someone being recommended to try feeding the fish with some epsom salts, that's supposed to have a laxative effect, but I'm not sure of what it is myself...

Just be patient! Baby will be okay (:

Well now he seems to sit on the bottom and can hardly move- like he is paralized- very alert thow looking all over the place. He wasn't very interested in eating any peas. It looks like he has a white film all over his body- like his skin is pealing.  Do I need to put him down? I hate to think I am prolonging his agony....

Then he most probably is infected by parasites! Is he isolated from the other fish? It could be flukes.
I shall recite a little quote from one of my books: "Badly affected fish become listless and lie on the bottom, occasionally scratching themselves against rocks. Secondary bacterial infection is common".
So I suggest starting to treat him really fiercely right at this second! Go get a pack of fluke tabs and follow the instructions to the last line, treat in four day intervals to be sure to kill off all the flukes. If he lost interest in food it could be hard to treat him from within, but I think you should still try to treat him with some kind of antibiotics to help if there's any bacterial infection involved.

But if you do feel like he's been suffering enough, he might just have been infested with these parasites for too long to be able to recover, then you should try to put him down as painlessly as possible.

Thank you for everyones help and advise, but Baby passed last night.  I watched him take his last breath.  I think he had an internal infection of some sort.  I had tried to treat for flukes and other parasites but nothing changed, he just got worse.  After an examination there seemed to be a large puss sack in his abdomin area- not a parasite, think it was infection.  He was separate from other fish, but I am treating that tank for any parasites too.  Everyone else looks good-
So I promise myself (again) to not get another Oranda!

My condolences on your loss.  He is off swimming in that wonderful tank far away, schooling with all the other fishies that passed into the Great Beyond.

Kfore,
From the pictures it looked to me like your Oranda had a bacterial infection, like Dropsy.
I think oral antibioticas are the best solution and should be used for a while to treat the other fish in your tank as a precaution.
You can also use Melafix at the same time.  I would also put 1 TBS of salt in your tank per every 5 gallons.
