Our 3 year old Fancy Goldfish is sick, can you help?

We have two Fancy Goldfish, one is 3 years old, large, second is very small and young, in a 29 gallon tank. Have been doing 30-40% water changes every two weeks. Large Goldfish I think has fin rot, he stays at bottom, sometimes is tilted against glass. He has ragged fins and his whole body has taken on a glowing look.
I started treating the tank a week ago with API Tripple Sulfa powder following directions exactly. I changed this week to API E.M. Erythromycin antibiotic powder when I saw on the diagnostic chart that medicine has fin rot on top of the list, rather than the Tripple Sulfa has it on the last of their cure list. We are in second day of E.M. treatment powder. He doesn't look any better. What else should we be doing? Is it a lost cause? He seems to be very sick. I have had him over 3 years and never had a problem, I don't know what could have gone wrong??? Can you help save him?

When did you get the second fish? Do you know what your water parameters are? Even doing water changes once a week you can still get a spike in water conditions. If treatment isn't working it could be ammonia burn.

Finrot
Caused by Aeromonas, Pseudomonas or Flexibacter bacteria
Frayed fins, often with a pale pinky-white edge and some blood in the fin tissue. The bacteria are present on most fish. Stress from poor water conditions usually triggers an infection. Nipped fins may become secondarily infected if water is polluted. Some wounds may also be attacked by fungus.
Improve water conditions. Isolate nippy fishes. Treat promptly with a finrot or anti-bacteria treatment to prevent the further spread of the disease. Consider adding salt (1-3g/litre) to reduce the loss of salt by the fish. Ensure that water stays free of pollution during treatment.

To answer question how long have I had second goldfish, the two were in my 29 gal tank for over two years together. The larger one that has died, I had over three years. There is only the one in tank, now, the second largest one, and he is now upsidedown...........I switched medication to what they suggested they do for sick fish at Pet Smart, and am using API Melafix "treats bacterial infections" rapidly repairs damaged fins, ulcers and open wounds......it smells like Tea Tree oil. This is third day of this new medicine. Being upsidedown is very bad sign I'm sure, he is still alive. He is large, about 4" long, and the Fancy Goldfish have a very large body.
This med says to give for 7 days then do a 25% water change, the first API med said do a change every 2 days which I did.....I'm going to do another today and not wait the 7 days. I feel this is all guessing and it's so sad I don't know exactly what to do. This has gone on for over a week now, but yesterday first day he went upside down

Being upside down means a problem with the swim bladder. If the fish is still eating ,feed with brine-shrimp which should help.

Thank you for trying to help, will get some brine shrimp today. I did a 50% water change yesterday, and changed to
Mardel brand "Maracyn Two" which I used in the beginning when there was an infection and had luck with it. After the 50% water change yesterday I added Nutrafin Cycle which I have always added after water change, then the new med, first dose was double strength, 2 packets per 10 gal. now today just one packet per 10 gal.
He is still upside down, but when I raise him in the net to the top, he is sideways, and skims food off the top. I don't have brine shrimp yet but will today. He spit some of the flakes back out, but hopefully kept some inside. He tried swimming after this, and managed to swim straight for just a few seconds, now has gone upside down again. As long as there is life, I'm going to try to make him well. Should I wait the suggested 5 days after this Maracyn treatment to do another water change? They say 25% change, but would a 50% be better?

Brine shrimp is sometimes labelled Daphnia.
I should go for a larger water-change, as water quality is paramount. Add aquarium salt as this is thought to be beneficial to prevent bacterial re-infection.

I added aquarium salt yesterday per your suggestion (forgot to mention it) in amt recommended on the box for my 29 gal tank. When should I do the next large water change? Yesterday I did 50%, the Maracyn Two treatment is a five day treatment, if I change water before the 5 days won't I lose some important medicine?
Not familiar with using salt, not sure how much to add again after the next large water change??? The box states salt stays in the water, and warns not to add more than suggested.

Fed him some brine shrimp today laying at top on the net, he ate it, kept it in for about a minute, then spit some or all of it out. tries to swim occasionally, but ends up upside down. I put a plain non carbon "filter" in to catch debris since I took out the regular filter with carbon inside. They recommended at pet store to go the full five day treatment with NO water change........do you agree, or how often would you do it? Thanks very much for your help so far.

My other suggestion would be to lower the water level in the tank. The reduction in pressure might aid his swimming attempts
If he's eating, then the brineshrimp should clear him of any constipation which might be causing the imbalance.
Have you raised the water temperature, as that might help him fight any infection.
Hope your fish pulls through

at 8 am today he is still alive, still upside down, I will buy a heater today, have never used one with goldfish before, but it makes sense when ill....we like warmth especially then too! Am going to try to lift him on the net to the top and see if he might eat more brine shrimp. I will take down the water level today too as you suggested. Hope that doesn't mess me up on the proper amount of antibiotic powder to use. Today is day three of the five day treatment. I was encouraged to see he is still alive this morning!!!
You didn't answer if I should do any water changes during this five day treatment? What do you think about that? Does the antibiotic need to build up each of the five days, or would a partial change be helpful?

Bought a heater today, for 10-30 gal it's a Tetra "no adjusting necessary" It maintains water at 78 which must be a lot warmer than my goldfish is used to, never used a heater. Is this going to be too warm for him? Hope to find your answer soon in case it would be too warm....thanks!

By time I got home with the heater he was floating upside down on top, before he was always at bottom, and his mouth is not moving anymore. Sadly, I believe I have lost the battle of trying to save my goldfish. I'm going to pack it in and not get anymore...at least that is my feeling at the moment. Have to return the heater and meds I just bought. Thanks for your help, I guess I didn't begin soon enough.

Aww. So sorry to hear that! Please don't flush him, though. If he's still alive, it will make his last moments torture. Don't give up hope completely, though. I've seen some fish on the edge just pull through like a miracle, but not all of them do. Just love him as best you can, whatever the outcome.

No, I would never flush him! He has been a pet for over 3 years. We're leaving him in the tank until tomorrow, to be sure, then will put him in a container with water and freeze him until spring when he will be buried next to our cat in the back yard. We have five cats and a collie, and love all our pets, including our two goldfish, who sadly are both lost now.
Does anyone know how to clean the tank to be sure whatever germs that attacked them are gone? I would be afraid to use anything again that is in the tank.

Sorry to hear about your fish. If you keep your tank running fishless for a few weeks, any parasites and germs should have cleared.

Thank you so much for all the help you gave to save him. I don't think I am going to continue with the aquarium, going to take it all down and donate, but will tell whoever takes it to run empty of fish for a while as you suggested.
