Problem poos.
« on: January 29, 2011, 04:58:59 AM »

Just needing some help as Sunshine is a bit constipated lately. I tried the whole not feeding for a few days and then only feeding peas for a few days, but it's back again. Nothing new has changed in the tank lately so it couldn't be parasites could it? The poo is dark, skinny and long. I'm thinking of soaking some pellets in the tetracycline and only feeding that for umm I'm not sure how long, a week?? Let me know what you guys think! Sunshine also has one red dot on her again Sad It has been extremely warm here so it is probably just caused by the heat, so the tetracycline should also help with that.

I'm just getting over some food poisoning ( Angry) so I haven't had a chance to check the water. Will do very soon though.

Oh man, the bad luck D:
I would be feeding her only veggies and live foods for a while actually... that usually clears out my fish! Wink You could also try giving her a little bath in Epsom salts Smiley It works as a muscle relaxant and laxative on fish, so that might do the trick! Along with the special diet Smiley

But another red spot?? I am starting to get into a despair, really D: I have no idea what you could do about it that you haven't already tried! It just keeps coming back, and... that's so strange Undecided Maybe you should really try the antibiotic food for a week or two? In case there's something internal going on that you didn't manage to treat last time.

Hmmmm, I start to believe it is the higher temps we have to deal with.
Did you have Sunshine last year during summer already? Did you have such problems too with higher temps?

I am not experienced in this, but logically some bacteria like the warmer temps... and I know it is hard to keep the tank cooler this time of the year, just going through the same experience here... (( except the red blotches )... also with our Sunshine)

I think I'd try Nossies diet, trouble is there are no live blackworms available as long as it is so hot  Sad
Food soaked in Tetracycline is not a bad idea either.

Hope all will turn out fine, including yourself
And hope you are ok too, geez food poisoning , how awfull, what happened? Please take care.

The thing is I barely feed either fish pellets anymore and I feed them the exact same thing, so why is Sunshine constipated and Clementine not? Well I guess that is obvious, same reason why some people get sick and others don't but still annoying!

It's just all a big worry! The red dot has gone which is good but why did it show up in the first place? Is there something still wrong with Sunshine inside like you suggested Nossie.

I'm just worried to try the anti-bacterial food as it has to be pellets and that might add to the constipation so I'm not sure what to do  Undecided

Also Sunshine's ventral  fin has not grown back, I can't even remember when it became like that and I've also noticed her pectoral fins are quite ragged, not white at the ends, just ragged like I said. I could try and get a photo but it's very hard, so I might look for one on google  Undecided I can't think of what to do about that, as it just seems that is the way it is now.

Not sure who else to turn to about this, maybe I could see if Aimee could ring that number she has mentioned before.

Oh and Hanna, with the antibiotic food, do you know if it is actually illegal to buy some over the internet and get it shipped to Australia? I imagine it is and it would be stopped at customs Sad

Andrea hope you are feeling better Embarrassed food poisoning = no fun! As for Sunshine, I have been seeing a similar problem with Jilly in thin or stringy danglers. Sometimes white other times dark and tattered so I started feeding Jungle anti bacterial pellets. First I soak them until softer and then dump them in. They dissolve or get mushy quick since they are very tiny to begin with - I hope they wont bind her up. Can you get this food around you or something similar? Hope she comes around sweet girl. Hope you do too - be well me lady Grin

No unfortunately I can't April Sad Australia does not allow this food for some reason, I think Hanna knows a bit more why Huh It would solve alot of problems if we could!

Oh and I am feeling much better now Smiley Not sure what it was, I think I may be very sensitive to potato as I've thrown up after it eating many times before  Undecided

Not terribly familiar with customs and their 'customs' of handling packages from international origins. I mean do they open parcels or scan them... I guess I will find out when the mail I'm waiting for arrives if it was inspected Undecided before leaving Australia.

grrrr... Angry evil taters making my fish loving friend sick...double grrr  Angry Glad you are feeling better  Grin

I hope Sunshine gets better soon Andrea Smiley It must be so frustrating Sad Especially when you can't find the root of the problem!

I think that they scan the packages and then open them if they seem suspicious. My boyfriend bought a plastic gun for one of his old super nintendos from America and it got stuck in customs for over a month lol. I think they might have thought it was a real gun in disguise Roll Eyes

Edit: These are the only things I could find that are apparently anti-parasitic. But they are not medicated so I am not sure how good they are. (Link is not visible to guests. Please register to view.) and

Ragged fins usually is a sign that there's something bacterial going on, as long as your water quality is good. And since it keeps coming back, that's where I'd put my vote Undecided
Like April said, try to soak up the pellets a little before feeding them, that'll make them softer and easier to eat Smiley And that way they won't block the digestive tract Smiley

Water quality is fine so yeah something is definitely going on and was not totally killed with the last tetracycline treatment Sad

Thanks for the links Abbie Smiley I'm just looking around that aquarium shop site now, as I don't think it's parasites, but bacterial as Nossie said, so I'll see if they have anything anti-bacterial. Though that garlic stuff may work. Might have to borrow some money and buy it tomorrow  Wink

I think I'll try the soaking of the pellets for the next 5-7 days in the tetracycline. Where did you buy your antibiotic food from that time Nossie?? I remember you buying it online. But then it's the problems with customs and will I get in trouble for ordering it  Cheesy

Or should I be soaking the food in something other than the tetracycline? Suggestions?

Oh right, Well the garlic stuff says anti-bacterial so maybe you could give that a go Smiley
They sell jungle on eBay (Link is not visible to guests. Please register to view.)
The postage is heaps expensive though Sad And like you said, it probably wouldn't get through customs and that would be a waste of money.

This website tells you the active ingredients in the most popular medicated fish food brands.
I have no idea how you will go finding these medications in Australia though.

I sort of really want to buy that Jungle food, I just know it would most likely fix the problem. But you're right Abbie and I really don't have the money to spare. I don't get why it is not allowed though Sad I could try but argh, it's such a bother! Thankyou for the links, I appreciate them.

Yeah I mean you could buy it but there is no guarantee it will get through, and in my experience they are pretty wary of packages coming from other countries.
I found a better link!!!!!
This one tells you how much to dose and it even mentions tetracycline further down the page Smiley

I got my food sent to me from Minde actually Smiley I was looking online here, but there was nothing but anti-parasite food so... That wasn't quite what I was looking for Undecided

Oh no! Sad But I may have some advice about keeping your water clean without a filter. Mine broke for the first 2 weeks I had Orbitz.

I feel your pain, like I said in another thread, when it rains it pours.  Old saying but so true.  Seems like everything bad has to happen so we can see the good at the end.  I hope  Sunshine gets better soon!
