Gravel Size

So I've tried searching the forum and google and seem to find many different opinions on gravel size.

Some things say the goldfish should be able to put it in it's mouth, but not get it stuck of course, what size is that?

I've read alot saying that it should be pebble size, but seeing as pebble size can vary somewhat is there a certain size range I should look for when going to the store?

It's hard to follow the rule of thumb that the goldfish should be able to put it in its mouth. The problem is that the size of gravel in a bag varies somewhat, so if it's slightly smaller or larger it could get stuck... Sad

Like fantailer said, pea-sized gravel is your best option.  Smiley

Though I guess I needed to be a bit more specific with my question Smiley

I'm wanting to get an approx size, like 3mm, 4mm, etc.

One thing I read said 3mm, is that pea sized? I mean, I guess I can visually look at it in store, but having a number to go in with will help Smiley

Elsewise I'll look for pea-ish sized ones Smiley

My gravel is a pretty mixed sized one, but as long as the pieces aren't as small as sand grains and the biggest ones aren't much bigger than 5-7mm it should be okay, considering that the fish will grow as well!
Most importantly though, make sure it's smooth gravel or else they could injure their mouths and get infected when they dig about for food Smiley

Kahime, I'm not sure if this helps any but I have two very young fish and I just bought the regular gravel from the store and they do just fine with it.  Just like with anything else, if they get a piece in their mouth and dont like how it tastes, they spit it out.  I havent had any trouble with the normal sized gravel!

I've herd that goldies like sand; is that true? Never had it myself as I prefer the look of the gravel. I would think sand would muck up the water pretty bad...as well as be hard to vacuum... Undecided But then there are some sucess stories... Roll Eyes

Never heard of it. But sand isn't safe for goldfish :/ They would accidentally swallow lots of the little grains along with the food and end up having digestive problems. Most goldfish get this kind of transparent poo, also called caste if they're kept in a tank with sand bottom.

Far out Nossie thats so interesting, do you know it works the other way in the avian (bird) world, they actually need grit to lodge in their gizzard to help grind up and digest their food... > Ron
