I had noticed that one of my blue orandas, Petra, was getting a little floaty after eating on occasion.  Not really a big deal, she just seemed to have a hard time getting to the bottom for about a half hour after eating, but since she's young, I wanted to stop it before it becomes an issue as she grows and her wen develops.  I have friends with fish with worse issues and gel food has always helped them, so I made a batch yesterday with pureed veggies, brine shrimp, bloodworms and some of their pellets.  Well, I thought my goldies were good at begging before, LOL, I can't walk into the room without them swarming to the front of the tank...MORE??  Grin  They loved it, and Petra did not float after dinner last night or breakfast this morning, so I'm thinkin' my fishies may have a new menu Cheesy

Glad to hear your fish enjoyed the treat, and also that you like to spoil them!  Wink One thing I know that does help if you don't have gel food on hand for some reason, is soaking pellets and flakes before feeding them to your fish - it gets out all the air and makes it easy to chew.  Smiley

Thanks Smiley  Good point about soaking food, I only did it with floating pellets so they would sink, never thought to do it with sinking pellets to get the air out.  Next month, we're away for a wedding and I know that my friend who is petsitting will not want to touch the gelfood (too icky for her Tongue ) so I'll try that for a few meals to see how Petra does, good alternative Wink

No problem!  Smiley I feed my goldies sinking pellets, and I like to soak them until they expand and 'puff' out to avoid risking swim b. disorder...it would not be good for your goldfish to get that when you are away. And have a good time at the wedding.  Wink

Do you have any other brand of pellets? I mean, it could be that your fish is reacting only to this certain one, because there's something bad in it, or too much air or something. Soaking is a great way to check, and to make it safer and easier to eat Smiley
I have bought my gel food, I've got some by the brand Tetra, it comes in little bags and I have some Brine shrimp, Blood worm and Algae "Mix" xD Pretty cheap since it lasts for ages! Smiley

Another thing, you could try to feed live foods and vegetables more often than the pellets, which you're most likely doing with the gel food already Wink

I have a few brands of pellets, but her floating seems very random, not specific to one type or another. I'm planning to eliminate the pellets in the next batch of gelfood and replace them with fresh ingredients.  What would you suggest for live foods, Nossie?  That would be a good addition to their menu, I like my pets to live as naturally as possible, lol!  Petra's floating was just a good excuse to start getting them off processed foods, I've been feeding my other pets home cooked food for a lot of years, my fishies deserve it too Wink

My goldies love earthworms, lol! Nasty but I do a lot for my little pets. You can harvest them right in your garden, then rinse them and cut them up into teeny pieces...you can use a toothpick to feed them to your fish. They sink as well, and I have noticed they are by far my goldfishs' favorite food.  Wink

I use to feed mine with some freeze dried gammarus, it wasn't available for fish here, so I bought a package for turtles Tongue But it works the same, still shrimp inside! I also feed them tubifex and blood worms, also freeze dried. Aside from these I have frozen and fresh blood worms as well, plus brine shrimp, all these are really good to feed Smiley I find it easier to prepare freeze-dried foods, but it's a matter of taste if you choose to buy it all frozen, freeze-dried or fresh. Unless you want to buy tubifex, they can contain a lot of disease if fed fresh to your fish, so choose the freeze-dried version of that.

Awww man I should have got earthworms at North Carolina yesterday morning! We don't have earthworms in Florida.

I love my fish but I sooo cannot see me touching earthworms  Cheesy  They've had the gammarus before, will have to order more and some tubifex.  They've always gotten blood worms and brine shrimp for treats and I put some in the gelfood this time, I'll be sure to have the other kinds in time for the next batch Smiley

"Fish clips" are great for veggies.  They look like bag clips but with a suction cup to stick inside your tank.  It's a great way to feed lettuce, cucumber, and zuchinni slices.

I have a goldfish called pluto like the small planet anyway i got him today and he is a comet tailed goldfish i have him in a 10 litre tank im getting another fish in a couple of days Grin Cheesy

plutoluna please don't get another fish your tank is already too small for one fish. You need 40 liters per fish at the minimum.

A 10 liter, for a COMET goldfish?? Do you know how big these grow? Easily 20-30 centimeters.
Oh my - , NO. Buy a 100 or 200 liter, then you can keep a goldfish. Don't even think about buying another one :/
