Pics of our new friend for F.B. and gender ID question
« on: June 19, 2011, 03:43:25 AM »

Hi all, went to the aquarium store yesterday, purchased an amonia test kit which was on my list as well as getting a friend for F.B.  Smiley ... we really like the calico fantails and were able to find this lovely little fella... at the moment he/she is in the quarantine tank with another couple of zebra danio's we brought as well... and acting a little perky in the warmer water... any idea of the gender, I was thinking a male, I can now see some pimples on the gill area... he/she can sometimes see itself in the tank and gets a little frisky with its reflection  Cheesy ...
Also heard that most goldies are females and that the males are rarer,  Shocked is there any truth to this?...

He is a MALE, congrats. The breeding stars on his gill covers are a 100% sure sign, also if you look close there are some "pimples" on the first ray of their pectoral fins.

What a lovely fish! The tail is GORGEOUS, and he looks so healthy.  Cheesy Whatcha gonna name him?

I've never heard that before, that male goldies are rarer. From my experience, more than half of my fish have turned out to be males.  Smiley

Thank you all for your lovely comments, we are so happy to have found him... we sort of thought it was a male, but not until I had got him home and into some warmer water. After a couple of hours he started playing about, I looked closer with my magnifying glass, and was amazed to see those little stars... F.B. will be pleased... he's a little smaller about 3 and a bit inches, so hopefully she will be able to handle his frisky ways... The person who sold it to us said she had a waiting list for males Grin ... must be my beginners luck, its about time I had some...  Wink ...
Havn't come up with a name yet, Shaz called him Bowie because like David Bowie he has two different colour eyes...  Wink
Thank you again for your help all  Smiley , and Goldiegirl I will start a new thread on how I take my images, (thanks for the kind words) I think the appropriate forum would be this sites Lounge forum... at  (Link is not visible to guests. Please register to view.)  Cheers > Ron
PS: just needed to say that your pictures are very good already, Goldiegirl....

Wow, that is unusual! I've never heard of a waiting list for male goldfish.  Tongue A frisky male goldfish will surely perk up F.B. I would think.  Smiley And Bowie is a very cute name. The hump behind his head makes me think the fish is a calico ryukin, not a calico fantail...either way, very pretty fish again.  Smiley

You should! I'm sure many others besides myself would be interested in seing how you get such great photos. (Thanks, but I still think I could learn alot.) The lounge would be a perfect place for you to start the thread...or pictures & videos, maybe.

Definitely a ryukin, and a little boy Wink
However, it's not a calico goldfish, it's a nacreous two-colored one, having both transparent and metallic scales Smiley Calicos have blue skin with red and black spots (+ nacreous scales). He'll be gorgeous when he grows up Smiley

Thank you Goldiegirl and Nossie,  Smiley we suspected that he may be ryukin, I was hoping someone would put us straight on the matter... wow Nossie what an ID, "a nacreous two-colored one" sounds somewhat like an alchemist of the black arts created it... again thanks for the info... he was in a tank of labelled ryukins and fantails, but the other ryukins had shorter tails... I suppose like the goldies there are a variety of tails that ryukins could have ?. cheers and thanks  Wink > Ron

ps: Bowie sounds ok to us as well...

Oops, my bad...forget I ever said 'calico!'  Tongue

I've seen ryukins with all different sorts of tails, as well as different tail colorings. Some tails are quite long and flowing, while others are shorter and are sealed...meaning they have no cleft. My favorite aspect of the generic ryukin tail is those long, black stripes that reach from the caudial penduncle to the edge of the fin.  Smiley

The stripes are one of my faves as well, I noticed he has this bright yellow coloured belly too... and there were calicos (light blue skinned) with long tails in the tank with him, he stood out to us because he was the only one that was orange gold. He is very active, he started picking up gravel in his mouth and spitting it about, and I noticed the discussion about the "pea sized gravel" so I measured a pea too (lol)  Wink and I changed it when I was renewing some of the water and cleaning up. Most of the gravel was way too small, pea sized seems better,  Smiley he now just gives the gravel a little "kiss" and leaves it, he must realise its a bit big for him... he is also getting a bit more used to us and comes up to be fed now...
Have to go back to the aquarium shop again to pick up a part I need and I think my partners afraid we will end up buying one of the calico's as well  Wink regards > Ron

Lol, alchemist fish! Cheesy

I think you should really call him Bowie Smiley If that's the first thing that came to mind, and you've already called him like that a few times Wink I ended up naming my new, red baby oranda simply "Baby" because I called her that all the time Smiley

I love watching my goldies forage for food in the gravel! <3 It's important to look for active fish when choosing a pet. Lethargic + unactive = don't buy that fish unless you are a fish expert and know you can heal it. And good to hear he is warming up to you. It's great when they begin to "beg" for food...swimming over to one corner as soon as you walk in the room, and bouncing up and down while pumping their little mouths.

Fish stores are my Achilles heel, as well as the weekest link in my budget...It's becoming a full-fledged addiction!  Grin

Be sure not to get another "nacreous, two-colored one" but a definate calico.  Cheesy  Tongue

Well we ended up buying a calico Ryukin and a new aquarium as well  Grin  (600mm width x 400 height x 350 deep), and we went for the more active fish Goldiegirl (thanks for the advice) over the lethargic one who was sitting in a corner (the water was very cold but I was taking no chances) she seems very happy with Bowie and him with her, I think they are in love, Kiss they swim around together getting all frisky with each other, sit on the bottom together, if one moves the other follows. I have put them together as they were in the same tank previously at the aquarium store only a week ago, our new aquarium will be their home.
I think we are sticking with Bowie for his name Nossie, and the new girl maybe called Snowy... will post a pic of her if I get time later today... Cheers > Ron.

she is mainly white and metallic with a few patches, she has a gold cap that looks like its being worn to one side (maybe she's the arty type) she also has a few black and gold stripes to her fins and tail, but not as many as Bowie... and she has two different eyes like Bowie, although hers are the other way round... and her hump areas are that blue colour...
Smiley she has adjusted really well and follows me around the Q tank when I am cleaning up, obviously expecting food, so does Bowie... they are funny to watch, nudging and sticking there heads up each others butts (lol)  Shocked then off they go following each other around.... will try for a pic and post it later. Very pretty tail; that's what struck me most about her coloring. 'Snowy' fits her perfectly - those spots on her tail remind me of those found on a snow leopard.  Smiley I like the picture in the middle with Bowie looking at her out of the corner of his eye...they look very good together. He's TOTALLY checking her out. Wink

How did you determine that Snowy was a girl for certain? Every time I attempt to identify the gender of my goldfish (when they don't have breeding stars, that is) they end up being the opposite... Roll Eyes

thanks Ireiden, Nossie and Goldigirl...  Yes we also love her tail and its mix of stripes and spots, and your right, Snowie does suit her... when I went to the aquarium shop I took an old magnifying loupe with me and checked her out with that (I must have looked like Colonel Klink)... I didn't want another male.... more than likely Iwas just lucky... she is a lot more social than Bowie... will try to get some pics of them together... also I was wondering if like Bowie her markings have a special name? maybe Nossie will know... cheers all > Ron

She's a real calico, simply Smiley There's a difference between calico goldfish and tri-colored goldfish. Calicos have these matte scales and blue skin as Snowy does, they sometimes have a few metallic scales here and there too.

How sweet that you got a boy and girl!! Cheesy Even better that they're getting along so well, Bowie must enjoy the company Smiley

Basically, yes Cheesy If you look closely at a calico/matte fish, you should be able to see the ribs. If the fish has a white head, you could even see the brain Tongue

Thank you again Nossie and yes she has a few metallic scales in a few spots.... Bowie loves the company, its so sweet to see them at night "sleeping" (or whatever they are doing) next to other on the bottom of the tank... that raises another question, are they sleeping or resting? they are so active all day I suppose they have to rest sometime.... regards > Ron

In fishes' case, that's their way of sleeping, and they can't do that with the lights on since they don't have eyelids to close the light out Wink Which why it's a pretty big problem that some people never turn of the tank lights and leave them on overnight. Just like humans, the fish will end up sick if they won't get sleep. Fish need to sleep for at least 10-12 hours, but I noticed myself that mine are very active during summer mornings here since the sun comes up already at 4 a.m.

Did I already ask how big these two cuties are? Smiley

My goldies are early risers too...and they all wait in the corner for me to wake up, then once I do they begin their begging ritual. I read somewhere that fish only need 5 hours of sleep  Huh Somehow that didn't seem right...I make sure to turn the light off as soon as it's dark.  Smiley So cute that they sleep together Ron... you should get a fish preacher to marry them.   Kiss

I myself got a little "two-colored nacreous one"... will post pictures when I get a chance if anyone is interested.  Smiley
